NGC 253: 3.5hrs Lum (WIP)

Not up to the standards of Peter's incredibly sharp version, but we do what we can...

Not sure when I'll get colour data for this. May or may not clear up tonight and my Astronomik's will be on their way to their new owner (hopefully) tomorrow.

Then again, I can always give those ZWO filters I have laying around a shot while I wait for my new Astrodon's...

Anyway, this is 3.5hrs of data. Seeing was ok; started off bad but got better. So much easier than NGC 300!

That looks Good Lee. I have been similarly reprocessing my data on this target. I am still not 100% happy with the colour. If you can you should try to get some colour data. There should be enough time left in the apparition to pick up the colour data you need.

I actually have a "WIP" in my Astrobin gallery taken one day off exactly a year ago... that has colour, but the quality is poor and the angle is too different for me to want to include it in this.

The point of that is that even if it takes me another year I still plan on getting a decent image out of this target ;-)

Hopefully my filters will come soon, although the vendor hasn't charged my card yet so I'm assuming it's not even on its way...

Very fine indeed. That you have the graininess in the outer halo down so low after just 3.5 hrs is remarkable. Nicely processed.

Thanks mate! I'm fairly content with my luminance processing these days; if only I could say the same about my RGB processing.

I may end up adding more lum to this, but at the moment the plan is to just get RGB, then use the (1x1) RGB as a synth lum in addition to the real lum. See how it goes...

Well, I tested out my "something different" tonight during a brief window when I could get the computer to stay alive.... I took a single 16min sub with an IR-pass filter on.

I expected to see more pronounced large-scale structure as per an ESO image I'd seen, but alas, that wasn't the case. I'm guessing the ESO image was done deeper into the IR spectrum.

I then managed to get two more lum frames with my old ZWO filter before the computer died again. On the bright side, apparently it's a known issue with 2012 Macbook Pro retinas that Apple are fixing even though they're out of warranty which is good. Either way, I've got a more field-appropriate (read: crappy) laptop on the way now.

Yeah don't risk a perfectly nice Mac out in the elements! A $300 notebook has all the horsepower you need to keep it all running :thumbsup:

I ended up going with a $690 Dell Inspiron 5000... depending how the display is, maybe I can use it for my full process. I currently do processing on a MBP anyway, so if the display is half decent........
