Advice needed

Hi all. I'm getting started into Astrophotography and I have been fortunate to come in possession of a Nikon D7000 DSLR. I've been experimenting with it doing landscapes, etc. I just need to find out how to set it up for long exposures.:shrug: So far I have set the mode onto "M" but I don't know how to find the "Bulb" feature.:eyepop: Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thanked in advance.

I have a Canon so this may not help you...while you're in Manual mode, increase the exposure length as far as it goes, and then usually after the longest (30s for Canon) it will probably change to "BULB".

Note that you'll want some way of remote controlling the shutter on your camera then, as you pushing the buttons will introduced blur vibration blur into the shot. Take a look into an intervalometer (timer remote) and/or computer control.

i also have a canon but i would guess it would be the slowest setting on the shutter control?? the one after 30 seconds?

if you are keen on doing some great imaging with your Nikon i suggest you get Backyard Nikon. it is cheap and gives you amazing control of your camera via computer.

I Have a Nikon D80 which I used when I first started out. I found the only way to have the shutter open longer than 30 sec is to use a remote pendant. However my Nikon was an older version. You might find a handy piece of software that can do what you want.

Thanks for the help guys. I found what I needed to do for the "Bulb" setting. While the mode is on M for manual, you then hold the "Info" button and rotate the Main Command control wheel until you see the shutter speed you require, the last being "Bulb". Lots more to learn me thinks!
