Aotea Stonehenge

Just done one of our madcap excursions chasing rally cars ( we found 'em ) way down south in the Wairarapa. Lots of stories to tell and great fun but astronomically speaking the highlight was to visit the Aotearoa Stonehenge just east of Carterton.
It's a project put together by the Manawatu Astronomical Society a few years back and a southern hemisphere version of Stonehenge in England of course but it reflects a lot of the local Maori folklore about stars and seasons etc. Quite surreal to stand inside and reflect on the thought that has put into it by a large number of people. I took some panoramas from inside the circle but I'll have to put them up on my website later. But here's a pic looking into the circle from the entrance.

Cool pics, just a couple of corrections though. It was build by The Phoenix Astronomical Society (NZ) and largely funded (materials at least) by the Royal Society of NZ. I was one of many who contributed their time to put it together.

Fun fact, in summer when the ground starts to dry out, a weird, occult pattern in the grass is seen. That's my crazy drainage installation at work. :lol:

Cheers for that Cam. It's a lovely place and the 7 minute explanatory video that precedes it is good value. Understanding the design behind it all made it quite interesting from a practical cultural point of view. It's been on my 'bucket' list for a while.
