NASA has called a news conference for Monday with the topic to be a major announcement concerning Mars. Hope it's not just another rock they have found. The panel contains an expert on water on Mars, so perhaps they have found water flows in some of the ravines. Anyone care to speculate, and don't say they found Matt Damon (aka Mark Whatkey).

A secret lander sent to determine that the skull was in fact remains of a past civilization has fallen down a shaft showing an inhabited underworld.
Or something.

i am sure they have uncovered a vast underground civilisation, digging canals from the poles to the equator where they build statues of faces the size of mountains and massive pyramids ...

i love NASA, but they tend to hype these things up a bit much, i am fairly sure that this is unlikely to be a ground breaking historical event, though i would love to be proven wrong

I think you're right on track with the liquid surface water theory.

Although I still reckon the Martians did a 'cut and cover' on their canals once they figured out we were looking ... ;)

...NASA should lobby Congress first to ensure the US has its rocket program back on line. For some time now, the US has been forking out 20 billion dollars plus per year to the Russians for the use of their Soyuz rockets. (as well as paying for European Space commission assets)

IMO this project should be a joint international effort (good for Science, Exploration, economics and global political stability)

Plus we need to trash QM theory first before we even think about invading the Martian landscape with our human lunacy and deranged sense of moral arrogance and ethical impotence.

:D

a little dismayed that NASA haven't invited Charlie Sheen to speak.

Watching the News Conference Now. Yes its water flows, confirmed by Spectro using the CRISM tool in orbit.

During the press questions the panel agreed it was a life indicator subject to further searches with Hi-Rise, and eventual lander research in these locations to confirm life in these flows. Life under the crust in aquifers is a good possibilty.

Fingers crossed for now, hope they find out sooner rather than later.

It was great to watch this press conference live this morning. This will I hope accelerate the search for life on Mars & it is certainly clear there are a number of missions planned in the next few years that can get us closer to that discovery. I will be speaking to local radio SeaFM Cairns about this in a little while.
