Hi

after months with wall to wall cloud (and the associated depressed spirits), finally a break and some fairly good seeing. Minimal processing and some noise in there, but that was the only way to keep full star resolution. Also, there is a very interesting galaxy group below the main galaxy - some look to be quite significantly red-shifted.

Thanks for looking - really appreciate any feedback.

Regards Ray

Really nice, Ray! What were the exposure details? They aren't listed on Astrobin. I've not imaged NGC300 before but it looks like a pretty dim target...

Cheers,
Rick.

That's just plain, old fashioned excellent Ray!! Great resolution, natural feel to the colours ... just a beautiful field. Can't fault it. A bit of Ha might be nice though. How much exposure?

Thanks Rick. I don't know the surface brightness, but under moderately dark skies it took about 100x5min lum and about 30x5 for each colour, all 1x1.

Thanks very much Marcus - guess I should get some Ha to emphasise the star formation regions, thanks for the suggestion. exposure details in previous post. Thanks for the feedback on the colour: there is not much on the internet to use as a template for this galaxy, so I relied on the PI colour calibration.

Nice image Ray.

I like this galaxy - but it isn't easy, surface brightness is only 23.01! (according to DSO-Browser.com). It's a bit like NGC6744 - looks like it should be easy but it isn't because of it's low surface brightness. Needs longer exposures than I can do.

Be a few mega $ telescope owners (or soon to be owners ) out there going DOH! Ray

Bloody Beautiful mate...bloody beautiful ;)

Get the right image scale and seeing plus some good processing and voila!...you win! :D

Nice work Ray, good colour and good background and interesting detail.

BTW that is an interesting group below the main galaxy.

Well done Ray. Really good details in the galaxy and nice colour. I read somewhere that this one and ngc55 used to be considered part of the sculptor group, but it seems from new red shift data that they are not. However, ngc55 and ngc300 are gravitationally bound.

Top image Ray,
Plenty of background galaxys.
You give me hope for what I could do with my 10" f4 Newt
& you're using an RCC1 like mine too:

That's an awesome image Ray. Fantastic natural processing as well. Stars are terrific.

These galaxies are massive distances away yet your image clearly is distinguishing many of the larger bright stars in it. Phenomenal when you think about it.

You really nailed it.

Greg.

I'm not sure I've seen a better job on this one.
Beautifully processed. Most of all just really loved exploring the hi-res :)

Just stunning, Ray. Something to spend a lot of time coming back to.

As I look at it, I get the distinct feeling that there are two sets of spiral arms, transparent, overlapping, but quite differently wound.

Love the detailed background critters too. Beautiful.

Just about to go away for a long weekend Ray but I thought I'd just leave you one of these before I go....

thanks Tony - it is fairly dim, but it is easier than 6744, since there aren't so many stars!

very kind - thanks Mike.

thanks Paul - I agree, the background galaxies are interesting.

thanks Geoff. this has certainly been disturbed by something - guess it could be gravitational effects from 55.

Thanks Allan - how is the f4 working out?

thanks very much Terry.

thanks Greg. I agree, it is amazing what is within our reach these days. Glad I lived long enough to be able to play with these wonderful toys

thank you Rob.

Thanks very much Mike & Trish. You are right - there seems to be a double structure with a couple of arms passing over (through) other arms. The two major star burst regions also seem to suggest that something disturbing is going on

 thanks mate - have a good weekend.

thanks Steve - appreciate the comment.

thank you Tim -very generous.

Thanks very much Richard. I have been thinking about up-gunning to a slightly bigger scope, but you have a point - maybe just stick with what I know.

thanks very much Rod - appreciated.

Thanks Aidan. I was very pleased with the background stuff as well - great hobby eh?

Hi Ray,
I might even set it up tonight -
I've been too busy or tired or the weather has been bad.
It should focus with a camera now.
We've got a full Moon but the SMC is up in the south -
that's enough for a test of the optics.

cheers

Hi

Apologies for dredging this thread up again, but I just found out that the small orange galaxy cluster immediately below NGC300 in this view is a recognised (merging?) cluster CL0053-37 https://www.eso.org/public/images/eso0221d/

It is at a redshift of z=0.1625, which is why it is orange and which puts it at over 2 billion light years away! gosh this universe is fascinating

All good by me - it allowed me to stare at your sparklingly good image again!

I'm processing an NGC300 image and there's three clusters in my wider view around NGC300, two are in your (much sharper) image. So it's interesting to find out a little more about this rich grouping, thanks .

Amazing cluster

Thanks for that juicy bit of astrophysics and the link, Ray. Thinking about what it is that we're photographing - what's going on out there - is half the fun.

Had another close look at your image, and in particular the colour of those distant galaxies versus the main beast. Very, very fine.

thanks very much Andy - it seems to be a very interesting region - looking forward to your image.

Oh all right then ...(groan)...if I must....

thanks

Thanks MnT. Agreed - I enjoy the challenge of trying to get equipment to behave, but the real fun is in trying to understand what is going on out there - particularly since modern gear and software can give us access to images that would have been unimaginable not all that long ago. There is also a lot of info available on the net as well, which can be a great help - it was real thrill to find out a bit more on the distant cluster.

thanks very much Tim

Not sure Paul - maybe 10 - 20 - but don't hold me to that.
