Is there anyone here good at fixing electrical doo hicky's?

Hi guys.

Dusting off the cobwebs of all my gear and have noticed that my focuser controller will only move in one direction. The cost to replace is around $400au so if it's possible to repair it I'd i'd like to do that.

I can pay of course.
Is there anyone out there that can take a look at it for me.

Are you sure the problem is within the controller, and not in the cable to
the motor, or within the motor casing?

Often with gear that has not been used for some time minor corrosion may occur between any plug/socket connections which can give rise to weird
problems when first restarting the gear. So, first check is to unplug and then replug ALL plugs and sockets twice which will usually remake a good connection. When I say ALL I mean all external lead plugs/sockets and any internal ones you can get at (eg plugs into internal circuit boards). Give this a try - it often works!

Have you tried both computer control and push button control?

If computer control works in both directions but button control only works in one direction then the push button contacts might be oxidized or corroded.

If neither works then it's upstream of the button.

From memory the Moonlite's have a position counter and limit motion to prevent this counter going lower than one! That is certainly the case when its PC controlled by a lot of software. That means you have to start controlling them initially from a position with the focuser racked all the way in. If you where to start with the controller racked all the way out the focuser then wouldn't move at all!

So your fix may be as simple as - slip the clutch and rack the controller all the way in then re-tighten the clutch - then see if both the controller and the PC allow you to go all the way out and in.

PS Wish that "feature" was much better documented with Moonlights!
