This is a nice little (5') galaxy that I took over the last new moon. Seeing was goodish--around 2.5" FWHM, but transparency was woeful and the exposure was quite short, so there is quite a lot of background noise, which I have decided to leave; more data should fix it. I'm happy with the detail and colour so far

Details:
Telescope: 12.5" Plane Wave CDK
Mount: AP900
Camera: FLI Proline 16803
Exposure: 160 min, divided equally among LRGB.
FOV: 21' x 21'

Once some of that noise goes that galaxy is just going to put out :P
Is that the remnants of a satellite in the top right corner?

Very nice Geoff. I had this on my list of possible targets then I realised I had imaged it before.

More exposure will smooth it out but its looking great already.

That looks really good considering you're sampling at 0.73"/px and seeing was 2.5" FWHM.... doesn't seem to gel with my (limited) experience. Tell me your secrets! :)

Thanks Colin--yep, satellite trail. I'll wipe it in the next iteration

Thanks Greg. This was actually a last minute decision. One of the other imagers was doing it and so I got the heads up. I hadn't known about it before.

Thanks Lee. Let's look at it in terms of pixels. The ideal is an FWHM of three pixels--much less and it's undersampled so you get blocky stars, more and it's oversampled, but that's not really a problem, although if you are very oversampled it may be a good idea to bin and increase your SNR. So at 0.73asp and an FWHM of 2.5" I'm hitting the sweet spot.

See here http://www.stanmooreastro.com/pixel_size.htm Have a look at the section "Optimal Sampling for Resolution".

That is an interesting looking galaxy and with some more exposure you will have nailed it Geoff.

The colour is already nice and the detail quite interesting to look at right now. I wonder how much more detail will appear with more data?

Interesting little Galaxy, Geoff. Good find.

Looking forward to seeing it develop with more data.

Excellent colour and impressive detail despite the poor conditions. Aches for more exposure next month.

Nice detail on such a tiny target there Geoff. Can't wait to see the finished result.

Great colour and details, Geoff! Just a bit more data and it will be a cracker of an image.

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks Mike. As you say--it's a start. Hopefully it will develop into something really good. It's a very photogenic galaxy.
