View Full Version here: : M20 in some NB and Lum

I have been playing around with some data I have collected so far on M20 and thought I would present an image with Ha OIII and Lum put together. I did some tweaking to the detail layer for sharpness.

Clearly the star colour is average and the orange nebula will not be for everyone but I think overall the image has some appeal.

Once I have all the data I plan on collecting I will present a final image.

Feel free to comment.

This is shaping up to be a truly super shot. One of the best M20 out there.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks Marcus for your comments.

Thanks Colin, that is one advantage of using narrow band in images. The combination of the data gives a nice 3D look to an image.

Thanks Marc, I guess time will tell how good it will be. I am hoping to pick up some more of the NB data in the coming week and then after full moon I will be looking to pick up the RGB to finish it off. I am probably going to do one image with NB and RGB stars and one image with LHaRGB. I am more inclined to think that will look the most pleasing.

Great image Paul, well done. It is fascinating seeing the different interpretations of M20

Really impressive Paul and akin to images with far greater aperture!

Beautiful Paul...it's almost as if the red ball is rushing towards us leaving the smokey trail behind it

Paul, this is an absolute corker of an image. I mean M20 is small compared to some other nebulae and yet with the detail you have captured here, you could spend the same amount of time looking around this image and still not see all there was. Great job mate. I cannot wait to see how this one turns out.

oh yeah that is really awesome, its a must view on the large version. detail around the antennae is impressive!

The main HH jet is wonderfully sharp and clear. One could cook a kebab on it.

I really like this presentation Paul. It has some depth to it, and the colour gives it an explosive violence that, after all, is what's happening.
I keep going back to the hi-res and studying it :-)
Nicely done.

A lot of drama in that image, Paul!

Lots of detail and I quite like the orange, very refreshing.

Thanks Dunk, Russell, Aidan, Trevor, and Rod for your comments.

Thanks Rob, there are lots of images online with the traditional LHaRGB view but not many with a mix of NB and BB. I hope that I can achieve something similar to my earlier shot in the year of the Trifid and Lagoon.

Thanks John, having had a good look around I agree, there are not many showing this level of detail from scopes under 20" and I am quite pleased about that result.

Thanks Rex, I agree. There are lots of quite interesting areas within the surrounding field too. It has some rather intriguing looking areas.

Thanks Mike. I really like the striations down the sides of the mound adjacent to those jets. Some interesting textures there.

Exceptional detail Paul. However, something about the colour handling does not quite gell for me just yet - not sure exactly what, but I suspect that it is just that I am used to seeing the more conventional red/blue colour scheme. Nonetheless, it is obviously going to be a very high quality and interesting image when you have the full dataset - really looking forward to seeing it.

Very nice Paul. Different. Nothing wrong with that but the classic colours are so nice on this object its hard to get excited about a new colour scheme.

Super detail.

Greg.

Impressive detail there Paul. I like the colour too - I am definitely more inclined towards the dark and moody than the lurid and gawdy.

Agreed, bi colour on some objects just does not do it for me too. This is one of them. I have picked up some SII now but still not enough to really put it all together. I need RGB at present to bring out the blues and reds properly. That will have to wait for new moon. Damn weather has been a pain in the last month or so, but it is getting there.

Yeah I like the traditional RGB look to this image too. The SII there is more to like but it will have to wait for more data. I am pretty sure the orange is putting me off too. It needs other colours to really pop.

Thanks Lewis, does it appear dark on your monitor? Both my Apple and 4K screen show it to be reasonably bright. Histogram looks ok to me, about where I normally have it placed, but it is always good to see where things lie with other monitors.

I like your photo Paul. It shows fine details and it was fun zooming into the image and appreciating fine structures within this nebulosity. Nothing wrong with the colours emitted from my iPad and absorbed with my eyes :)

Love the detail, Paul! Will reserve judgement on the colours for the final version :)

Thanks Slawomir, I am pleasantly surprised by the detail level obtained in this image. I have had a good run with seeing in the last couple of months and the AOX has made a real impact I think.

Thank Rick. The bi-colour does tend to look a little monochromatic to me. I think though there will be two final versions. one with traditional LRGB with some Ha and one with NB and BB combined. Still picking off data each night. Trifid is now transiting before 8pm, so I am having to catch as much as I can each night.

Good grief, just delved into the full res version and the depth is quite something. Excellent image. After the "H" thread on which 10" over the weekend, am firmly back in the GSO RC 12 camp when I put together the next setup.

Good job

Looking sharp there Paul!

Have you sorted out the issues you have been having with the adaptive optics guiding??
Cheers,
Tim

The colour is bright but the colours are not lurid is what i meant. I am not a fan of the gawdy so this suits my tastes nicely.

Thanks David, it took some time to develop this scope to the point it is at now, but it was just tweaking one element at a time.

Thanks Tim, essentially it is sorted though the first sub either after a filter change, meridian flip or refocusing still requires a manual stop start the AOX capture. The subs after that one guide fine until one of the former has to happen and then the first sub after that is affected, with subsequent subs unaffected. Bizarre stuff. Cyanogen think it is a logic problem during automation. They are working on a fix and have asked me to download the latest version of Maxim 6. That might solve the problem perhaps. There were some AOX fixes in that update.

Other than that, this has been a good investment. Marcus said I would not ever go back to traditional guiding and I am starting to believe it.
