Hello all,
Back from a week away in Tasmania for the Aurora Australis and Night Sky Festival. I was fortunate enough to get some aurora action on three of the seven nights I was there. The big night was on the 15th (pics coming soon) but on the 17th I was originally booked in at Cradle Mountain but heavy snow fall and road closures prevented me from making it there. I instead headed up the east coast to see if I could find some clear skies for some star images over the ocean. I ended up at Freycinet National Park where it was reasonably clear so I thought I would try some star images overlooking wineglass bay but once I had walked to the lookout the wind really picked up and I decided to head down to Coles Bay to a spot that I have shot before overlooking The Hazards. I was doing a sunset to dark timelapse sequence when just as it was getting dark I noticed a faint glow over the Hazards and a quick look at the back of the camera confirmed my suspicions. I couldn't believe my luck. The action didn't last long though and the incoming tide and wind direction change forced me to end there.
I then went to Bicheno where I had booked accomodation and as I got to town I thought I would head down to the Blow Hole to do a test shot to see if the aurora had picked up again. Just as I got there it did. With the blow hole being quite active at the time I tried to be a little creative and light painted the spurts with the faint aurora display in the background.
"Out of the Blue"
187107
Canon 6D, 14mm, F/2.8, ISO 5000, 30 seconds- blue glow on left is from a lightning flash out to sea.
"Blow Hole Aurora"
187108
Canon 5D MkII, 24mm, F/2, ISo 3200, 20 seconds.
Cheers
Greg
