I have just been reading up on a new virtual reality positional tracking system called Lighthouse Tracking from Valve and was wondering if this could be used for quick and accurate polar alignment. The links below have some interesting articles:

I have previously wondered if an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) like the gyro and compass in an iPhone could be used for polar alignment, but understand that it is not accurate enough and is subject to interference.
It seems like accurate positional tracking is important for virtual reality systems and the Lighthouse Tracking system is planned for release later this year as part of Valves virtual reality system.
Could the transmitter be secured to a fixed location around the observing area (e.g. somewhere in the backyard) and the receivers fixed to the mount for a virtual reality polar alignment?
I haven't really had time to really think this through, but it seems like it could work???
