Wonder why the scientists are calling them dwarf galaxies if they only comprise 500 - 1000 stars. I would have thought Globular clusters would be a better description.

Globular clusters are, by definition, at least somewhat globular. These dwarf galaxies can be any apparent shape, symmetrical or otherwise, as is the case with the large and small Magellanic Clouds.

You are most likely correct Ray, just checked the definition according to Wikepidia
" It does appear clear that globular clusters are significantly different from dwarf elliptical galaxies and were formed as part of the star formation of the parent galaxy rather than as a separate galaxy. "
