The Bulletin magazine this week has an article Ice Rage. On page 29 there is a map showing Sydney's new waterfront properties if the sea level rises 14m. On the next page there are similar maps for Melbourne and Brisbane.

If you go to:
http://flood.firetree.net/?ll=-27.8390,138.1640&z=13&m=7
you will be able to find new waterfront land near you. :help:

I wonder how long it will be when global warming will affect property prices ? Not just from rising sea levels be from people migrating to more pleasant climates.

interesting playing with water levels.... now if we could tap that watery resource and say... make it drinkable by removing elements... Oh gee, i think i am on to some thing here

water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. :(

Actually ving it's all drinkable. All that ice that is melting to raise the sea level is pure fresh water.

We seem to go round in circles, more evidence of severe climate change, more denial from politicians and big business. There is increasing evidence that smoke from plantation burnoff is causing the increasingly dry weather we've experienced and it's being subsidised by taxpayer dollars to the tune of $4600 per hectare. I see the Business Council are proposing that private enterprise could do a better job of managing water and that we pay too little for it. Given that big business is mostly responsble for climate change either directly (by polluting) or indirectly (by supplying products and actively suppressing change e.g. the oil industry and motor industry) it's a bit rich when the perpetrators of the problem are now wanting to profit from the outcomes.

Do us all a favour and write to your local members and more importantly support parties that have the environment as their first priority. Only when they fear losing their places in government will they start to act. :tasdevil:

Think I will start writing to some pollies too. I would love to see Global warming the major election issue but It will probably be some tax cut or race issue?

Here's a few good sites I digged up

When you mentioned 'the impressive dry spell' I felt a smile going to wast as here in New Zealand we seem to have had an increase of cloud cover by a noticeable degree. Very annoying for the astronomers among us. The rising of ocean levels is a gradual process. Have a good look at the NASA site. You have hundreds of years before the tide will swallow Sydney. Armed with this information it would be good not to buy land on a shallow coast line..
Some of these perceived climate changes are a fiction. Unless you can demonstrate changes in temperature by careful documentation. This is still speculative scare mongering. Some of that ice from the polar regions may not end up in the ocean. Some large amounts of water could be just in our atmosphere. which is a issue for me. Cload cover is increasing and, could by
2 thousond years block the whole sky. Dang

read a great article a while back which stated that the planet is still emerging from a mini ice age from around the 15 th century or so .We started keeping accurate records of climatic conditions a couple hundred years back which
showed a steady increase of temps over a long period .. jump forward to the early part of the 20th century and a spike starts to appear in this steady increase.. likely due to the beginning of the industrial age . So we arn't entirely to blame for climate change ,but sure arn't doing anything either to slow things up a little .

The bigger picture of things is sure a tad worrying , aside the the polar melts
equatorial ice caps are increasing .. dramitic climate change around
the central part of the planet where all the huge populations are
makes it hard to fathom all of the consequences.

From what I hear there are 3 stages.
1. The Arctic ice cap melts in summer and stops reflecting sunlight causing temperatures to rise.
2. Greenland's ice cap melts due to the rising temperatures causing a rise in sea level of up to 7m.
3. The Antarctic ice cap melts causing sea levels to rise another 7m.

Ocean ice melting does not cause a rise in sea level, but ice melting off the land does.
Some say that US government estmates on the time it will take have been increased by the coal and oil industry.
Ice cores from Antarctica give us a long history of temperature and CO2 levels.

I live pretty near to the beach, worse still I live in the lowest point of a dip between 3 hills ..... my GPS unit tells me I'm about 8-10 meteres above sea level.

By those maps my yard becomes a small isolated pond around the 12m rise level, with most of my neighbours sitting nicely on the shore looking at my submerged palace.

When the warming progresses it will be time to sell up and by a nice high spot with good dark skies instead.

This map of Australia shows where rainfall is decreasing and increasing, 1900-2005.

There are also maps for each state.
The Qld coast is getting drier.

It's called desalination, but I think there is a enviromental problem with
that also.

Mhh, about 1/6th of my country will be flooded. In Holland it's even worse.

Glen, dont think we'll have a problem with rising water for awhile yet,
Coombell sits 198m above sea level not sure what Casino is. The good
thing is we got near an inch of rain last night. Actually The drought
hasn't been too rough closer to the east coast as we are, hate to think
how the folks on the western side of the range are fairing.

Casino is 26m above SL, Lismore 11m & Grafton 7m.
When Greenland melts the sea will rise 7m.
When the Antarctic ice cap melts it will rise another 7m.
The question is when will that be? 100 years? 200 yrs?

Maybe I should recheck Coombell, I think I got my figure when I was
setting up Starry Night Pro. It gave me an option of going online to
look up my exact long/lat. Low and behold it had Coombell in there.
Cant imagine Coombell being higher than Casino.

Where did you get your numbers from?

My figs were from
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/map/climate_avgs/clim_avg1.shtml

Google Earth puts Coombell at 40m.
