These are going for $119 at Aldi soon(1st August). I know the retail scopes are generally junk but can anyone comment on the quality of this particular model?

from Melb a 76mm Newtonian isn't going to show you a great deal -much better to look for a secondhand 114-130mm scope -or something like a 70-90mm achro refractor [eg celestron astromaster] a heritage 130 dobsonian should be ok for you

Daniel is right. , these while good for the moon and brighter planets will soon loose their appeal and those eq1 mounts are an exercise in frustration for a newbie , aperture rules so go for a 6 inch Dobsonion , way more user-friendly and will show so much more.
That said this would beat , hands down the scope that I started with many years ago  .

I agree that a 76mm scope isn't going to show a whole lot, and I'd also recommend going bigger. Hence I'm puzzled at your mention of a 70-90mm refractor. How is a 70mm refractor going to show more than a 76mm Newtonian?

It's not the aperture that is the problem here but how it is put into practice. 3" is a great size for grab-and-go, but not with all the unnecessary junk that is attached to this example, or the level of quality these things are known for.
