M20 - Upclose and Hot

I thought I would post this image for comment. It is a test of high focal length imaging using a DSLR at a relatively higher than normal ISO setting.

Scope : Celestron 11" Edge HD at 2800 mm focal length.
Guiding : Celestron OAG
Mount : Skywatcher AZ-EQ6
Camera : Canon 60D

Lights : 3 * 10 minute @ 1600 ISO

Stacked in PS with some slight level and curve adjustments.

I think it is a very nice photo, great colour and good detail, and surely it looks even better in full resolution.

Images like this one make me want to try dslr imaging :thumbsup:

All the basics are there, at F10 just needs more exposure...so I'd say success at nearly 3m FL :thumbsup:

Ah yes! Nice image, Rob!

Great foundations for additional subs.

Shoot some 3 -5 sec subs for the star cores. Add them to the longer subs (I use PI's HDR comp tool for that) and you'll have a cracker!

Damn good result rob.

When I first bought a c11 and put it on my old eq6 pro I struggled for a long while to get results only half this good. For a 3m focal length it's awesome.

Thanks Alex and Rusty. I think precise polar alignment is very important for long focal length guiding. Additionally I have made some local mods to PHD2. I have 60 minute test guides with round stars. I think the EQ6 and AZ-EQ6 perform exceptionally well.

I would say more subs probably? Are you using darks? Is your camera cooled?

Had a couple of squints through you DOB , but you weren't there most of the times when I came around.

I was using a stock standard Canon 60D. No darks. Didn't seem to need them as the images appeared to be almost noiseless. The temperature was about 12 degrees. From discussions with others , the Canon camera noise with most imaging models, appears to be minimal around these temperatures.

I am intending to purchase a modded and cooled DSLR from Central DS for summer use.

Rob, just noticed you are only a couple of suburbs north of me. I'm in dakabin. How are the skies out at Caboolture? I find where I am at Dakabin is decidedly darker than murrumba downs where I used to live. Caboolture should be quite reasonable

Alex , I am about 15 minutes north of you. I am on acreage , off Beachmere Road, on the Bribie side of highway . The skies are good enough for imaging. Probably about 75% of dark sky site.

Don't mind the in your face look there Rob. As Mike, notes some more data wouldn't go astray as it would give you greater flexibility on how the data could be processed. Reminds me when I first started imaging at long focal lengths with a NexStar 11 on a wedge. That was some nail biting times with wonky stars. You're bounds ahead in comparison.

Thanks Jase . I have been in the hobby for almost three years now. So I am a relative newcomer. Still don't have much of a clue how to draw the detail out of and enhance my images. I purchased the C11 Edge HD as my Galaxy imager. I only managed to get three 10 minute subs , before the clouds moved in. basically it was a test to see how my DSLR would perform at 1600 ISO. So I am keeping my fingers crossed for next new moon to get some more subs.
