This photo of the Jewel Box cluster was taken by my holding my smart phone up to the eyepiece of my 10" Dob. It's terrible, of course - but that's not the point. I had a lot of fun observing, and then taking a quick snapshot.

What's not to like?

It actually did quite a good job. The exposure couldn't have been much longer without elongating the stars,[ assuming that your Dob is not Go To ]. If your Dob is Go To you could get exposures of up to 30 secs
or thereabouts with a camera that has manual control.

Thats how it started with me. Ok that looks nice, lets put the point and shoot near the eyepiece, just for a keepsake....wow that looks better than visual.....dslr later and the view is much better....and today a goto mount. All good fun, unless you have deep pockets then you might be in trouble.
