C/2014 Q1 (PanSTARRS) and Moon July 18 0840UT, 2 x 30 seconds with an ED80 @ F4, cropped.

Not an easy one to process as the Moon was throwing flare all over the place.

Well done and nicely framed. Going a bit wider field was the way to go tonight. Took the 10" to the sports field down the road but it came in damp and misty and Elise did better with the 5" refractor. That tail sure is long though. Hope the clouds give us a break for another night at least.

Great image Kevin!
Is this comet visible with binoculars - I tried to see it tonight but I couldn't. Maybe it wasn't dark enough?

Tony.

Thanks all!

The comet should be visible in binoculars, though I guess it depends on sky conditions since it is so low. If there's too much smog it could make it difficult.

One of the most striking astro images I have seen Kevin. I even like it more than your APOD image (not to take anything away from that one - it too is superb), but to me this image is sublime.

That's an impressive result, and especially given the huge studio light you used

I haven't been able to catch sight of this comet sadly, but among the photos I have seen, this stands out.
Well done - Trev

Thanks Bruce, glad you like it.

Thanks Trev. Hope you can sight it soon as it's stating to fade.

This image does have some processing that is similar to HDR in that the comet and Moon were not equally stretched. A bit like what we do to the core of the Orion Nebula so we don't burn out the bright areas. In that respect the image is not linear in tonal range. But then neither is the Orion nebula if we want to see the core as well as the outer loops.

Thanks Mike! It's not often we see a '"bright" comet near the Moon. The last time I caught something similar was with Hale-Bopp in 1997.
