Ngc6559

Clearish skies at last. After seeing images from Rick and Paul I thought I'd give this a try. This is NGC6559 The Leaping Dolphin Nebula. Actually I just made that up as the red nebula to the right looks a bit like a dolphin leaping out of the blue reflection nebula. It is also the toes of Bigfoot near M8.

NGC 6559 is a star forming region located at a distance of about 5000 light-years from Earth, in the constellation of Sagittarius, showing both emission (red) and reflection (bluish) regions.

Details: GSO 10" F4 Newtonian, 305 x 30 seconds, Baader Semi-Apo and Astronomik CLS filters, Baader MPCC MKIII, HEQ5 Pro unguided, Pentax K-5.

Because I use an unmodified camera, the region lacks some extended Ha, though I like the colours that are there. The mixture of emission and reflection nebula I find quite attractive.

Nice going Kevin. I like the colours you have achieved also. That rig of yours does quite well for such short subs. Glad we finally got some clearer skys, I was beginning to wonder what was going on this year.

Would you believe it was warm and very humid when I was taking some data for this last night. Got less data than I would have liked due to cumulus cloud. The mossies were bad. It was like summer out there.

Lovely object and good color balance Kevin, just a note on the brightness: the black look a bit too "black", perhaps there is a bit of clipping on the low light? :question:

Nice one Kevin - I love the colors in this.

I've only tried this one once - with little success. The F4 scope captures the light a lot faster.

If it's ever clear again in Melbourne I might try this one again. Too bad about those clouds - this is my favorite time of the year - but Scorpio/Sagittarius will soon be disappearing behind the very tall conifers on the west side of my backyard. Seems like only yesterday when they were rising at 3am!
