Venus/Jupiter conjunction

At least it was clear tonight which was a nice change. :)

Used the ED102 & a 4x Powermate to get this. It's a montage of 2 frames - 1 exposed for Venus & Jupiter & the other for Jupiter's moons.

I did collect some video but it seems a bit overexposed so I didn't have much luck stacking it. I'm sure there must be a way to reduce the brightness of it.

Good to see the bands on Jupiter as well as the phase of Venus. The montage worked!
Try stacking your Venus video in Registax6 (freebee) and then attacking the brightness with the Histogram function. What software do you have?

Thanks Robert. Yes I have Registax 6.
It couldn't seem to find any alignpoints by itself. It's quite a while since I've done anything with Registax so I've kind of forgotten what to do. Using the histogram function - do you do that after stacking & before wavelets?

Yes Pete, with an overexposed image it probably is difficult to find a point to work from, it is, I guess, just a white blob! Try selecting a few "likely" spots around the edge and see if you can work from there. If not, then perhaps you can firstly isolate your frames and adjust individually using something like Photoshop's levels. If that can't extract anything, then methinks........! :question: Have another go at capture??? Since there is no surface detail visible on Venus beside the phase shadow, there is very little to work from at the best of times.

In Registax, I find that I work with both the histogram and wavelets at the same time. All a matter of trial and error. A big learning curve whichever way.

Another program which I have found useful is AviStack2; another freebee. Worth investigating if you haven't already done so.

Still not the greatest capture in the world but more detail and sharper moons.
Sadly the fourth moon close to Jupiter wasn't captured anywhere.

Venus is not as good however due to the lower resolution of the DSLR's video mode (combined with flare due to overexposure and the resultant lack of stackable features). There's always something :)
