just finished lunch. i went to some parkland/reserve on teh opposite side of the cooks river to the airport.... there i sat on a rock eating lunch and taking pictures while giant planes landed.... till i saw it!!!

a little grassy knoll right under the flightpath near the riverbank. it was about 2 meters tall and flat on top. "should I?" i asked myself, "bloody oath I should!!" came the answer from one of my personalities. and so with a rather large plane coming in (one of the lumpy ones (747 isnt it?)) I climbed the embankment and kneeled on the grass, which had been flattened by others. i set the camera to "sport mode"...

WOW!! it was such a rush! the plane was so close that i felt i could touch it!!! :D
i held the shutter down, not really watching the screen and got 2 shots off before it was over me. a piece of body neer the landing gear somewhere and the tail.... my heart was beating at a million mile per hour!!! :D

*** mental note *** next time bring ear plugs!

rang cheryl and told her. her response was pretty much boys! and  . i ofcourse didnt see her roll her eyes but i know she did ;)

Newsflash - Virtual Cow Killed by falling aircraft - witnesses say Astrobelle was grazing and daydreaming when the Humongous Airbus just dropped out of the sky almost dismembering Astrobelle. Luckily for her she was grazing................

What was that movie Tinpushers or something, were the two flight controllers get a buzz out of standing under aircraft as they land and geting the wind knocked out of em.

When I was in the RAAF at Williamtown I was at the very end of the runway when a 707 took off, Awsome. I was taking photo's with a fish eye lens crouching on the ground (so i didn't appear in the shots) the Plane must have passed anly a matter of 10 of so metres above me. I will see if I still have the pics.

I got to stand about 5 metres off the side of the main runway at RAAF Scherger last year as a F-111 took off.... very cool, probably the cause of my hearing deficit now!

That movie was "Pushing Tin" .... which is how the aircraft controllers in the movie describe what they do. Billy Bob Thornton, John Cusack - very funny ... and if you needed further reason to watch it Angelina Jolie looking very gorgeous!

I'd give it 4 banana's out of 5 - a must see if you have a quirky sense of humour!

While I was still at highschool back in the 70's, a mate of mine and I used to get through a hole in the fence at the end of the east-west runway and actually lie on the end of it. Our excuse was that we were researching wave theory for our physics class. We were convinced that if you lay right in the middle, the jet blast and lift patterns would cancel each other out due to destructive interference right down the centreline. We were very wrong.......

That WAS a rush. We'd be jailed for doing it now.

We get the RAAF doing low fly overs out here in the bush. Somtimes I think
they must use Coombell and Rappville as way points on their missions. They
also use the range behind us to practice terrain tracking. They
scare the living be-jeezus out of ya. When they come in at 200 feet doing
what ever you only hear them leave. A few months back I was in the garden
when one chap came across. this was the first time I could hear him coming
I got a few seconds warning to look up at him flying right over head maybe
200 m above I could see his head gear and the components on it quite clearly.

The best view is watching them skim the tree tops a 1km or so away they
look awesome with the sound over there and the aircraft way ahead. I love
them and would love to have a ride.

When I used to live in Sydney I used to take my son Jake down to watch
aircraft take of from the airport. Never able to get that close but there
were a couple of spots in Mascot that could get you good views depending
on the runways being used. But that would of been awesome!!!

regards,CS sunny days

Nice pics there Ving. I can imaging the rush that you must have felt from a plane been so close to you and I bet the noise was defening :D

Those daring young men under the flying machines!
hehe noice one David - it reminds me of the scene from 'waynes world' when they lay on the bonnet of the car looking at the summery starry sky (while wayne whistles the theme from the original star trek series - amazing whistler! and it was at the end of the runway of the local airport lol)

My best experience of this type was at the 1990 farnborough air show in the UK, when 3 (or was it 5? cant remember now - got the pics somewhere) sea harrier jump jets put on a show for the crowd. They hovered tightly together less than a 100 mtrs away, just metres off the ground, for what seemed an eternity, but maybe was at least 5 - 10 minutes? doing bows to each other and the crowd, and just plane showing off with little dance routines. At the end of the show they just pointed their noses up and pppwoiwwww, shot off like ufo's straight up into the wild blue yonder.
The sound was unfreakin believable (saw lots of jets that day - nothing came close to that except the mig-29 maybe) the resonation and harmonics that built up was awesome - was like having you insides in a sonic blender, talk about thunder! it actually brought tears to my eyes, not sure why (not from pain), but very overwhelming and emotionally impressive effect.
Only other sonic thing that came even close I have experienced, would be at the 2000 BDO in adders - watching the 'Chemical Brother's' do their thing ;)

One of the most 'impressive' noises Ive ever heard was front row central at the Avalon airshow from a Super Hornet going vertical.

Just booked for next year - 2day gold pass - anyone else going ?

your going Ving and thats all there is about it!

I can see the headlines now 'Man Arrested for Laying on Runway in Path of Jet at Vic Airshow'
'Man explains, "I had to, as I no longer got buzz from commercial air traffic, and my habit demands a greater thrill" '
