Hi all,

Having a right royal lousy time with the weather. Alas that goes with astronomy.

Also means we are eternal optimists, :D Probably loopy for that too, :screwy:

Well, we've been penciled in for a session at Katoomba Airfield for Saturday June 20. And it's gonna be FREEZING !!!

First thing I'll do up there is get the combustion heater cranking!

Access to the Airfield is via Medlow Bath, the next village after Katoomba heading west. At Medlow Bath's only set of traffic lights turn into Station Pde, and then turn left into Rutland. Rutland is also known as Grand Canyon Drive. The Airfield is 4km from this intersection with the last 3km being unsealed. Being unsealed it can experience erosion that can create nasty ruts in the road surface, so take it easy. It is not a 4WD road. Just an unsealed road surface. See the first pic below.

The Airfield is totally BYO power, food, drinks, etc. Loos are available for kids and ladies. There are sofas in the office building we can get some kip in too. The office building also has a combustion heater that becomes the centre of the universe during winter. There is also no actual finish time. It is up to you when you've had enough or need to head home. But we are welcome to stay overnight if we like.

This is an informal gathering. We all share the cost of a gift to Rod, the Airfield manager, of his preferred brew. The hat gets passed around for this.

These get togethers are a great chance to ask questions if you are new to astronomy. Folks who come up bring a wide variety of instruments and gear, and their interests vary just as widely from visual through to imaging (and even sketching... ). The Airfield's elevation at 1000m also makes it not only one of the highest observing sites close to Sydney, but also its elevation makes a big impact in reducing the influence of Sydney's light pollution. And being on top of a ridge, and with its clay runway, dew is very rare, and fog falls into the valley below. :stargaze:

Accessing the Airfield

Note that some natsav systems call this site "Katoomba Airport", and won't show Katoomba Airfield.

On entering the Airfield's gates, keep to the left hand track - there is no access to the observing field using the other two tracks. Drive past the "no entry" sign and turn right up the hill past the various buildings. The setup slab is on the left once you reach the main runway. See the second pic below.

The first pic below shows the route to the Airfield coming from Katoomba. The second pic shows the way to the observing slab on the main runway.

If you have a telescope, bring it along! If all you have are binoculars, brilliant! Bring them! Binos are a fantastic astronomy tool. I always bring my pair. If you don't have a scope, no problem either, we like to share the views through ours.

I may well be bringing two, maybe three scopes up. Won't know what to do with myself!

Last note: It WILL get cold up there. Very blooming cold. Please come dressed appropriately, including shoes, gloves and beanie. The office building's combustion heater will be on for when you need a bit of a warm up.

See you soon,

Alex.

Hoping to manage this one, then I can actually meet some of you (I made it to the airfield once, but only one other guy showed up after a dodgy forecast, then we were lucky with skies)! But might depend on whether I'll be busy looking for a new rental place to stay...

For those coming up to Katoomba on the 20th of June, the annual Winter Magic Festival is on so it will be busy in Katoomba during the day and there will also be fireworks above the Carrington Hotel at 6:30pm.

99.9% guaranteed to be wet with a southerly blowing.

Enjoy, folks, I think I'll make other plans involving a log fire and winter Christmas.

Looks like it will be alright to me. The ground might be wet if that's what you mean. It's gonna be cold though.

For the out of towners :P

20th is the Winter Magic festival in Leura and Katoomba, lots of people and road closed as they have the street fair etc. Parking will be non existent in Katoomba. So if you want to buy anything or eat on the way up I suggest Springwood. On the other hand make a day of it. Park at Medlow Bath and catch the train back to Katoomba is the best idea. Medlow Baths Hydro Magestic is also now open and well worth a visit to see the restoration and redevelopment of the old site.

Have fun
Roger

Bah, looks like circumstances are against me - I can't make tonight, and so hopefully that means you'll all have perfect skies :). Forecast is excellent (http://forecasts.bsch.com.au/stormcast.html?ops=gfs:2015061918:2 015062012:nsw:cloud-total:null:0#sc).

What a truly excellent night it was. No wind at all though so the dew was serious and the frost was substantial. 2-3 mm of FROST on our cars and equipment.

However, atmospheric stability was 10/10 no contest. Atmospheric transparency would have been up there as well. And it lasted for a 4-5 HOURS. HOURS!

The view of Saturn was absolutely amazing. The best I have ever seen. I counted 7 moons of Saturn for sure and possibly an 8th moon. I saw Hyperion for the first time in my 12". Which is about magnitude 15. Which is beyond the supposed limiting magnitude of my scope. My scope was pointed at Saturn for at least 3 hours. Everyone just wanted to keep coming back and look at Saturn.

It was the most exceptional night of observing I've ever had. And everyone else who was there would have to agree that it was something very special that we wont soon forget, and will talk about for years to come.

Last nights conditions was not a once a year occurrence. It was more of once a decade kind of night. I am going to remember last night till the end of my days.

Simply staggering.

On a side note. Credit where credit is due. The best views of my life was through a Baader Hyperion Zoom and ES Coma corrector, which I kept in the focuser for about 6 hours. Pretty much all my other eyepieces stayed in the eyepiece box.

Agree mate, that view of Saturn is one I will never forget! We were looking at it at 4mm which was 400x from memory in your scope and it was absolutely tack sharp. It wasn't like there were moments of good seeing either, it was just brilliant the entire time and you could really spend the time to take in and enjoy the details of the view. The colours and bands on Saturn really stood out as well. Incredible contrast like I have never seen before. It was like looking out a window of a spaceship orbiting Saturn.

I am sure we will be using last night as a benchmark for all future astro adventures. Dunk, you should have been there buddy! Truly, it was incredible.

Thanks again for the views mate. And hope the Maccas went down well too!

Thanks for an incredible evening out! That view of saturn was jaw dropping. I didnt think it was possible to see that much detail! Well worth the drive, the dew and the frost. Can't wait till next time. Thanks again everyone.

Gutted  :mad2:  maybe the sacrificing of an astronomer satisfied the cloud gods?! Great to hear you had an excellent night chaps :D

Needless to say, it's been clear the past few nights with my scopes unobtanium but now the unboxing is getting under control, the forecast for this week isn't so great

Oh erm and wot no images :D ;)

Looks like the sacrifice of three astronomers, myself included, was enough to appease the weather gods! Any volunteers for the altar next time :P?

It stayed clear in Sydney on Saturday just long enough for me to get the scope out and start fiddling... then the clouds rolled in for the night :mad2:.

I'm glad to see it finally turned on a night of top seeing - now you guys know why I used to go to Hargraves for years.

Meanwhile we were warm and toasty :)

Yippee!!!

Photons at last!!! :astron:

A night of several firsts it was:
First night in months we got to use our scopes.
First night in months for screaming great stable conditions.
First night in years I saw the Horse of Sagittarius naked eye.
First night of not a breeze and enough dew and frost to drown in!

The view of Saturn through Adrian's scope was nothing less than staggering! A truly magnificent sight. Only once or twice did I see a hint of a flutter from thermal currents. Just wonderful :D

I took my new little 8" f/4 rich field wonder, Kulali. :eyepop:, what a special beastie it is... :) Coupled with good eyepieces for a fast newtonian, and the image it throws up is just delicious! Upto a 3° true field of view I can get with it, and the detail that such a rich field scope can throw up at low magnification is amazing. The galaxy M83, not only a sizeable blotch, the nucleus was obvious even with direct viewing, averted vision revealed its bar, and I caught a couple of glimpses of one arm. I needed to view M83 through Adrian's scope to confirm what I saw, and there certainly was the same arm in the same place in Adrian's scope. Angle's breath faint though, and I only managed a few fleeting glimpses of it.

That combustion heater though, if it wasn't for it I don't think the cold that night would have been so tolerable.

A wonderful night with great company! :)

Alex.

Very jealous of you all - the Mewlon and I are itching to get out under the stars again after so many bad weather months.

Unfortunately, we were moving house this weekend and I was in no state to make it. I saw the clear conditions and thought of you all.

The Mewlon and Saturn will have to wait until next month.
