M20- Trifid Nebula

Hi All,

This is a first light with my QHY9-Mono CCD. Taken from my backyard suburban Melbourne on the 17/05/2015. I think it turned out ok, but my stars need better processing :(

Any comments or feedback/tips much appreciated.

Details are: 15x300sec Lum, 15x180sec RGB binned 2x2 on a QHY9S mono. Guided with a QHY5L-II and orion 50mm guidescope. All on a Neq6Pro mount with Explore scientific 127ED.

Hi Robert,
Yes i noticed the brightness as soon as i saw it on another computer!
I usually process on my iMac and the contrast and colour is much different. I have been advised in the past to use sRGB instead of AdobeRGB but I keep forgetting!!
Anyway I have attached an edit, hope it looks better.

plenty of stars and plenty of colour you like your new camera use the HA filter as your luminious and then RGB You will see the differance

Yes I did try one with the Ha, but it only reall shows up the emission part, and i wanted to get some Lum for the whole thing so that I could get a complete image to check the new CCD :) But yes, i will add Ha next time out.



Robert, couldn't help but fiddle, I have now done a full repro attached above if anyone is interested.



Thanks Russell. Can always get better! Actually i cant wait to try this with my newt once my OAG comes through. Hopefully minus the Differential Flexure.

I wasn't game to say anything negative, as everyone was obviously happy with your image, but I can now say that I am happy that you have quietened that bright copper/ bronzish background colour right down,
however, for my taste, I think the colour saturation is now just slightly overdone. Nice job anyway.

Yeah I fixed it once I noticed it on another computer, actually it was terrible.
I can see where you are coming from regarding the saturation. I have made some changes to this but I won't upload any more to this thread.

Possibly still a little overly-contrasted for my tastes (I probably under cook mine to be honest) but really nice colour and saturation in your final image.

Good job Goran. You have a good set of data there, so it will worth your while to have another crack at the processing when ever you are in the mood. Practice makes perfect.

One thing I have done is to look for a good image of the same target by someone else, and then try to replicate it with my own data. I have learnt a lot this way :-)

Yes I have seen lots lately, I think somewhere in the middle of my original and my final would have been best, but, I think I'll wait until I can get some more data for it, perhaps some ha for the emission area and the fainter nebulosity which I think I processed out :(

excellent start to the Trifid Season Goran :)
You really have dug out the detail with your second image and tamed the background well.
The colour vibrance is a little on the high side but does make the nebulosity pop out well.

Hi Goran, nice image! Possibly just a wee bit too saturated for my tastes in the repro - I quite like the gentler nebula colours in the first image, but the overall effect of the repro is probably better.
