Hi everyone,

Me and a colleague of mine have recently started 3D printing, just small odd jobs for friends and family. I mentioned that there may be members on IIS who may wish to simply use a 3D printer ('BYO' Design), or request for parts to be designed and printed (Full service). So I figured why not post here and see if anyone is interested :)

We are both Engineers (Aerospace & Mechatronics) and highly proficient in CAD modelling. We have access to multiple printers and a variety of colours and material types. Anything from custom finderscope holders, EP holders/racks, custom boxes for electronics (i.e. dew heater controllers), spacers, replacement dust covers/caps, baht masks of any size, dovetails, knobs, adapters, spacers - you name it  It is so cheap to print these days and can be completely customised to meet your exact needs. Of course, we can also help print anything outside of astronomy too :D

Please PM me if you are interested in having a part made up. Hope we can help out here!

Clear skies,

Meru

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your requests, it's been great helping out the members :D Apart from custom one-off designs, a common request is for Bahtinov masks. The prices are as follows:

For masks 0-200mm, we can 3D print for only $30 posted and can add the following features if you wish:
*Your choice of colour
*Can add text you wish to embed on the mask (name/club name, scope details, OD of mask etc)
*Various styles to secure to the scope such as via tabs, full lip, drop-in etc
*Can add a little handle in the center so it's easy to pull the mask out
*Can accommodate any other specific requests

For masks above 200mm, we will do laser-cut 6mm MDF masks. Can customise with 3D printed parts if needed, PM for quotes.

If you are interested in a baht mask, please PM and be sure to provide *all* the dimensions needed.

Thanks again and looking forward to helping out :)

Cheers,

Meru

Hi everyone,

A couple of examples we've made recently for IIS members. Two different styles of printed masks (one with a notch in the middle to remove from a lens, and another with tabs on the end to go over a 100ED). We also helped develop a custom secondary with vortex-style vents to assist with dew issues (cross-section views attached) :D

Meru

Hi everyone,

Another update :) First is a custom knob for a feathertouch focuser. An IIS member came up with an idea of attaching a large wheel to the 10:1 focusing knob of his feathertouch to make life easier ;) As you can see in the cross-section view, we have added some knurling to the surface to help with grip, gave it a hollow section to save weight and strengthened the area where the grub screw would be tapped in to secure it over the 10:1 wheel.

Second are tabs we developed which slide over any wooden baht masks, if you wanted a mask that sits over the telescope rather than inside it. We are also working on a custom radial block for a C8 to help seat the guider package correctly, and even helping produce a repair part for a watercooler!

Keep them ideas and designs coming in

Just received my new Feathertouch fine focuser knobbys 3D printed by Meru and Co. Very, very happy with them. I used a hot air gun to snuggly fit it on and it looks like I wont need the "just in case" grub screw. Looks and feels very accurately made and the serrations on the outside match very well with the Feathertouch coarse focuser knobs. I think they are going to be great.

Sorry Meru, I want/need a 3D printer now :D

Hi everyone,

Very excited to say we another printer on the way which has a much larger build volume, meaning not only can we print larger objects but also offer Baht masks up to 200mm. Prices updated above :)

Meru

Now offering gold colour too :D here is another custom Feathertouch knob for a member (don't mind the poor quality image)

Hi all,

Another update. We are currently printing two custom caps for a member who owns a custom-built refractor, with one cap sliding inside the dew shield with ribs and the other sitting on the outside :D We also got asked to print a replica part from a broken water cooler as the OEM would not send a replacement (a small plastic thumb wheel). Possibilities are endless!

Hi All,

I agree with Barry's comments about the knob for the Feathertouch. I fitted the gold coloured version to the focuser on my Televue Genesis, it is ideal for the job. Meru designed and printed the knob exactly as specified, including the custom colour and at a very reasonable price. I now have some other custom items on the way.

Regards,

David.

Just some quick feedback, I was hoping to do a proper review including a star test but the clouds have stopped me in my tracks!

I bought a Baht mask for my C925 off Meru and after some drams where Aus post lost it for two weeks, I finally took possession last week. The mask is wood due to the larger diameter and the clips 3D printed, both of really nice quality and the fit up was bang on to the dimensions I provided so a happy customer here.

Meru

Thanks Paul! Yes it was quite a marathon to get Auspost on our side (even then, questionable) but glad the items reached you safely in the end. Thanks again for the feedback and look forward to more items in the future :)

Hi all,

Just another update. The new printer has arrived and has a huge build volume! The quality of finish is very nice, and with an accuracy of 100 micron (0.1mm) we can print some pretty fine things. Attached are a selection of items have recently printed using both printers:

Custom electronics box for a member with a request for orange colour for high vis
Two custom telescope covers (one with an external lip to go over the dewshield, one with an internal lip to side inside with ribs) with text inlay of the telescope maker. The covers will be 'lacquered' by a light acetone brushing which will give them a very nice and smooth finish
A custom focuser adapter plate - It is to replace the standard plate that comes with the Bintel 2" Crayford Focuser to fit a 10" Skywatcher Dob without having to drill new holes in the tube. The the Bintel plate is only 90x90mm where the Skywatcher is 105x105mm with different hole centres, and also with different curvatures. In this case the member (JoelyE95) supplied the STL design file so we simply provided a printing service :D
Next is an assortment of masks for various telescopes - including set of three masks for different focal lengths on a FSQ106

Lastly, the prices for the masks have been updated to a simplier structure (one price for all printed masks). Looking forward to helping out more and keep the ideas coming! Clear skies :)

Meru,

The focuser plate arrived today. Very happy with the result. I just need to make a few changes with my model (should someone else want one) so that it goes straight on with little work and to be able to tap a few M3 threads to fix the focuser to the plate.

I am already thinking about other things to design and have made.

Thank you!

Thanks for the feedback :) mask looks great on your scope!

Joel,
Really glad it fits (mostly) as per your original design - the file you developed was good and look forward to helping you out further ;)

Hi everyone,

Back for another update :) We've had a few more custom jobs which is great! In order of the images:

A set of 2mm spacers to help get the correct backfocus for a member's imaging setup
A custom electronic finderscope holder - a ZWO camera is bolted along the vertical slot using it's standard 1/4" thread. The feet are curved to match the curvature of the member's newt and screws into the carbon fibre tube
A custom laser point holder - the base again matches the curvature of the scope. The top plate sits on this and via spacers can be tilted up and down. An arc slot was placed at the rear to allow left/right adjustment and thus full directional control over where the pointer aims
A custom Baht mask with the telescope's name engraved in the mask

Apart from the regular requests for masks, we are also looking at a custom EP case, and even covers for a member's boat equipment! One exciting thing I am looking into is trialling 3D printed nuts & bolts which will open a world of possibilities. One of these is a custom finderscope bracket where the adjustment screws can be printed to be of any size with any bolt head (for example, wing nut-style screws). Another possibility is placing metal nuts into the holes, and then one can use any metallic screw they like if they choose to.

here is a spacer ring i got made by Meru for threading my powermate into my filter wheel. This is required due to the T thread otherwise protruding into the filter wheel stopping it from turning. You cannot buy this from any current manufacturer. Of course you could bodge up something to work, but price, fit, quality, packaging and customer service were all 6/5 stars, so im glad i went this route

Krishan,
Thanks for the feedback! Yes that's the great power of 3D printing, custom jobs are always the best ;)

Colin,
Both Rovers looking good :D cheers for the pic!

As another quick update, we have printed three instrument covers for a boat owner (140mm in diameter to give an idea of size) with the OEM's logo across the top. White to reduce the heat ;) Also updated the design for the custom Electronic Finder at the request of the member and re-printed for him. This one is structurally more rigid with the slots for mounting refined as well to suit his lens/camera combo. Currently looking at a custom finderscope shoe bracket and even a baht mask that can be moved out of the way without needing to be removed off the OTA!

Received my Bhatinov the other day (have been meaning to post sooner sorry!), and am very pleased with the quality, packaging and the cute spanner it comes with ;)

Put it to use a couple of nights ago and works a charm.

Thanks!

Hi John,
It's a Bahtinov mask for the Rover, it slides over the tube (like the cover that comes with the scope). Colin got the telescope's name printed on the mask too for a little authenticity ;)

Thanks Andrew for the feedback :D Glad we could help

Meru,

I have a crazy idea for an alternative polar scope holder for the Polarie.

The Polarie has a hot shoe adapter on the top. Is there any chance of making a fitting which slides into the hot shoe and then holds the polar scope?

I'm happy to send my stuff down to you to work with, if required?

Thanks.

H

Meru
22-09-2015, 05:25 PM
That's a great idea! It can be such a pain looking through the polar scope and then careful removing it/adding the DSLR in fear of moving the set up.

Should be able to do it without needing it sent down as hot shoes are standard sized (can use my DSLR for ref) and all I'd need is the diameter of the polar scope. I can make it an interference fit for the polar scope so it just pushes through the printed holder, no need for any locking mechanisms for easy set up/down.

Shoot me a PM and we can take it from there :) PS had a good laugh at your tumblr link

Thanks again Meru!

I'm going to have to make a list of other things to get printed now

Meru

Thanks Bret! Glad they fitted straight away, good measurements you sent me :D

As another update, few more things completed and more under works :)

The Electronic Finder for a fellow IISer has been fitted using the 3D printed bracket, and works like a charm. The setup will now be run remotely!
Printed a f/6 'stopper' for a pentax 6x7 lens to help slow it down for widefield works
Dustcaps for a Tak system (some which fit over the item, others that drop in)
Two baht masks - the smaller one to slide over an ST80, and the larger one to sit inside a newt on the secondary vanes with the mask centered by the secondary via the circular cutout
A third baht mask (no image yet) for a 100ED which has a little handle in the middle to assist in removing the mask inside the dewshield

Always lots of ideas being discussed with members, keep them coming!

Hello everyone,
Purchased a bahtinov mask printed by Meru with a small knob in the centre for pulling it off the scope and the name of the scope printed on the front of mask.
It looks great and does the job of focusing the scope using Backyard eos.
I can see a lot ideas for making gear using a 3d printer and not just astro gear.
Well done Meru,

Very happy with the f/6 aperture mask for my Pentax 6x7 lens that Meru 3d printed for me. It fits perfectly - exactly as I wanted
I'm now considering what other goodies I can get printed ;)

I was hoping to have some pics taken with it to show off by now but it clouds up every time I even think about heading away to a dark site.

My job tonight is to calculate all of the dimensions and angles to get a "plate" made to attach a Robo Focuser to my focuser via the Finder scope area as the bottom of my focuser is round and experience obscene amounts of flexure when trying to attach a flat plate :) Heads up to Meru... I'll probably get it wrong the first time haha

Wayne,
Appreciate the feedback mate, looking forward to developing more of your ideas

Pete,
Thanks for the comments - Glad to hear it fitted perfectly the first time! It must have attracted those clouds :P

Phil,
It was good fun getting those designed with the OEM's logo on them :D

Lewis,
First time I did a glow in the dark print - pretty exciting. Looking forward to working on your projects.

Colin,
Can't wait to see if the dimensions all line up straight off the bat! Might have to keep this one away from your dog

All,
Another round of updates with two new additions - can now print in glow in the dark blue and green, as well as translucent material! Unfortunately don't have images for everything. Been a great year and looking forward to working with more members to get their concepts off the ground:

Currently developing a custom flange to mount a Robofocus unit to the focuser unit designed to only use only existing fastener holes
Printed two custom brackets to support two Reinshaw Encoders on a member's Equatorial mount to help digitise. Also looking into 2D files for laser cutting various parts
Re-designing the custom Secondary I initially posted for a 'v2' iteration
A polarscope holder that slides into the hot show on top of the vixen polarie
An f/6 stopper for a fast 5" Apo to help slow it down
Printed three white caps with the OEM's logo inlaid for instruments on a member's boat
Plenty of caps - for riflescopes, finderscopes, guidescopes, for missing telescope covers etc. One of them were done in glow in the dark - pretty cool!
Plenty of masks too as always - For a 10" Newt, WO100, 100ED, 80ED, 80ST and a custom 4" Apo. Each one unique (with custom names inlaid, fits over or inside the dewshield or rests on the secondary, a handle for easy removal etc)

As always, clear skies and keep those ideas coming!

I have a Logitech G25 force feedback steering wheel. (i.e. a very expensive computer games peripheral!)

It is malfunctioning and according to the Internet the most common reason for this is that a small plastic disk associated with the optical encoder is broken.

If I were to open it up and find that this disk is indeed the problem, could I mail you the broken disk and you replicate it and send me one with a few spares back?

It's a common enough issue that if this works I suspect you could make a fair few bucks selling replacement disks on eBay.

Hi Travis,

This is the real strength of 3D printing - creating those hard to find, or impossible to get otherwise, parts. Sounds like a simple job and no issues with mailing me the defective part. I'll send you a PM and we can go from there

Hey all,

Big thanks to Meru for getting this design to print. This design has 2 large threads that work perfectly.

It had to be incredibly precise as the thread holds the secondary mirror in place. And it works.

It also has a plenum to create a air flow effect over the secondary.

It is the secondary of a 16 inch RC I am building.

Hi all

I have a home made lightweight dob and had explored using a couple of finders. I had found a few aluminium/steel dual finder stalks, however I need to keep the weight down. So, Meru recently printed one for me using this design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:608132/#files

I'm very pleased with the result, which is more robust than I anticipated. And Meru was a pleasure to deal with.

Just received my order from Meru of a couple of Bahtinov masks including one for a FSLR lens hood that I use as my guide scope plus a lens cap to suit so I can leave the hood on.
And the most important parts being cover plates to replace the ones I destroyed so I could adjust the EQ6 mount. The new ones are made of a baseplate glued to the mount and a cover plate screwed to that so it can be easily removed for future adjustments.
Another happy customer. Thanks Meru.

Brett,
Been great working you, can't wait to see our other projects come to life!

Andrew & Ken,
Thanks for the feedback :) it was fun helping get these custom parts made

All,
As always lots and lots of bits and bobs to be designed and/or printed. I will stop listing every job from now on and only occasionally place an update when something really interesting comes up. In particular have been these three parts:

Brett's custom secondary. Been a great project to create a large, 3-piece design which screws together and also has angled vents to create a vortex-flow over the secondary for efficient thermal transfer and dew prevention. The threads to screw these pieces together had to be custom designed and on the whole took several iterations to get it perfect.

ParamountME steel pier. Member had access to a laser cutting company and created multiple files for the machine to cut out every part of the pier out of structural steel (base, top and bottom gussets, upper plate with mounting clearance holes etc).
Custom tube rings for a 16" RCOS. This has definitely been an interesting bit of work I got asked to do. Had to design two sets to tube rings, using a laser cutter, using stainless steel and perspex as the sandwich material. The rings clamp to the RCOS via the felt-lined perspex (shown in red in the 3D CAD renders). There were alot of constraints, such as mounting hole size and location, perspex shape to maximise contact with the stainless rings, aesthetics and function of the truss cutouts to save weight on the stainless, and how to best integrate the aluminium blocks (not shown) which will mount the tube rings to the mount as well as serve as the clamping mechanism to secure the scope. The joint also had to be designed to meet a certain bolt type and hinge design per request of the member. Lastly, I provided a sketch for the operators to verify various dimensions to ensure the final parts are cut correctly. This item was finalised today and is now ready to be cut, can't wait to see the outcome!

As always, clear skies :)

Hey all,

I thought I would show some of the 'out of ordinary' parts that Meru has drawn up for me.

Not only has he been doing 3d printed parts but also for laser cutting steel plate, in Aluminium, stainless and polycarbonate. The pictures in this post is the 3 piece assembly that we used to mount a 150mm secondary mirror to a van slyke manual secondary I had. This is for a redesigned RCOS 16 inch I am building.

There were also air vents so I can blow air directly onto the secondary surface, hopefully eliminating dew and surface boundary layer on the secondary mirror. The assembly parts all screw together via the 4 x 3d printed threads.

These are 3d printed parts to Meru designed to mount the Renishaw axis encoders to my mount. Cant wait for unguided imaging at over 3000mm focal length.

Anybody with Renishaw encoders on their mounts (i.e. Planewave Ascension owners) will know the satisfaction of the green light on the readheads!

Next the mounting rings.

I already had dream dovetail plates. So I needed to make the mounting rings for the custom tube.

So we designed up a mounting ring system made from stainless plates with poycarbonte sandwiched in-between.

Meru made up the CAM files for the laser cutting of both the polycarbonate and stainless steel, including bolt holes.

sorry for the delay in getting this up.
Thanks Meru for getting these done so quick, no more cord wrap on the Evolution mount and makes it so much easier to use Hand Controller while looking through the Eyepiece.

Thanks Tony!

Some updates, I can now offer chrome plated parts. I have attached a sample part which was 3D printed for a car restoration project (bottom is the original print, top is the chrome plated part). Quite useful for embellishments or for something unique.

Also now have access to a MDF/Plastic laser cutter (in very large sizes if needed) so if you need a large Baht mask or anything else which doesnt need a 3D print, please send me a PM :)

Lastly if you are looking for any laser cut parts (metal, water jet glass cuts etc) or for CNC machining I can develop/supply the 2D/3D files to help get your idea off the ground :D

Clear skies!

Meru has made a nice cap and mask combo for my Sharpstar 106 F6.5

Scope did not come with a dust cap, only a bag to cover the lens.

The cap also serves as an 80mm mask should I want to observe at F9, there being a second smaller cap for the inner section.

Tried it out last night on Adhara. The 8th mag companion was easy at full aperture, and still just visible with the scope stopped down- not bad for 80mm!

Meru, printed a few mechanical parts in ABS for a small project and also provided advice about clearances. Result was very good. All parts clipped together and function as designed.

Hi Meru,

Thanks for the RA and DEC CWD levels clips for Losmandy G11

Meru made the black clips to attach the spirit levels (from local DIY store) to the G11 to facilitate finding the counter weight down (CWD) or "Home position" in Losmandy speak.

Hi Chris,

Apologies for the delay, I have been overseas on a remote site with no internet connection. Will reply now!

PS If you browse through the members list, there is a section called "Last Activity" which shows when the person was last active on the site - very useful in this sort of situation :)

Got my mask for my ED100 through the mail the other day. Fits like a glove and is great quality. Not had a chance to try it yet due to work commitments but I'm sure it'll be a great help in the field.
Thanks Meru

Cheers

I got 3 masks done recently, but have only been able to put one to actual use so far.

It fit and work perfectly. Even though I auto-focus with the scope it was on, it gave me a quick way to get close to correct focus and to verify the results of the auto-focus routine.

Now that I'm back from the USA eclipse I just wanted to thank Meru for his exceptional service in relation to two 3D-printed solar-filter holders he made for me at short notice.

Because I wasn't sure whether I would be able to take one or two telescopes (due to luggage constraints) I left it till really late to ask Meru to print me up two solar-film holders of differing sizes (consisting of two separate pieces for each holder).
Meru really came through for me and had the parts printed and delivered to me in less than a week! Needless to say they worked perfectly and the eclipse expedition was a great success.

Really appreciate Meru's exceptional service.
