What do people use for their tabletop scopes when they're out in the field? At home I use my daughter's little wooden table, but it definitely won't fit in my car.

I don't use a table... I just sit on the ground or "squat". :)

That's a good idea ;) I want to take my parents out of town some time to show them what it's all about, so I need to accomodate for my dad's old fogey legs

this problem is similar to what to use under an old German Equatorial mount typical of old school f/6-7 8"-10" newtonians, which needed a rock solid base 20-30" high.

While I had a steel tripod that took half an hour to assemble what with a dozen nuts & bolts etc it was never particularly solid.

The best solution was a fixed wooden pyramid I made from hardwood floorboards glued and screwed. This was also perfect as a low table for tabletop scopes such as the Questar 3.5". When I made this I had carefully measured my cars boot to make sure it would fit as one piece without any need to fold it.

Bunnings has all you'll need - the boards and the tools.

on my back deck I have a rickety iron 3 legged table. Horrible all round with vibrations from deck and table, it takes ages to settle.

Out camping, I put it on the ground and use a folding camping stool from anaconda, which have been a great versatile purchase to be honest, we use them all the time.

I also have down the yard a chopping block (solid piece of tree about 40cm high by 50cm round, this works well with my Denver chair that I made, which is a bit too skittish at very low settings

I like this idea. It makes more sense than sitting on the ground :)

Haha It depends! I ENJOY sitting on the ground, but I am very flexible. I can EASILY touch my head with my foot or do yoga stuff for example. Sometimes I also sit on the ground to draw or do other stuff. I just find it comfortable. :)
