Hi folks,

It has been such a loooooong time since we've had a good dark sky session. The long range forecast is looking promising, and we've been granted permission to access the Airfield for Saturday May 16th.

Though I'll be at SPSP that weekend, our mate 'hickny' (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/member.php?u=361), Peter, will be at the Airfield.

Access to the Airfield is via Medlow Bath, the next village after Katoomba heading west. At Medlow Bath's only set of traffic lights turn into Station Pde, and then turn left into Rutland. Rutland is also known as Grand Canyon Drive. The Airfield is 4km from this intersection with the last 3km being unsealed. Being unsealed it can experience erosion that can create nasty ruts in the road surface, so take it easy.

The Airfield is totally BYO power, food, drinks, etc. Loos are available for kids and ladies. There are sofas in the office building we can get some kip in too. The office building also has a combustion heater that becomes the centre of the universe during winter. There is also no actual finish time. It is up to you when you've had enough or need to head home. But we are welcome to stay overnight if we like.

This is an informal gathering. We all share the cost of a gift to Rod, the Airfield manager, of his preferred brew. The hat gets passed around for this.

These get togethers are a great chance to ask questions if you are new to astronomy. Folks who come up bring a wide variety of instruments and gear, and their interests vary just as widely from visual through to imaging (and even sketching... ). The Airfield's elevation at 1000m also makes it not only one of the highest observing sites close to Sydney, but also its elevation makes a big impact in reducing the influence of Sydney's light pollution,

Accessing the Airfield

Note that some natsav systems call this site "Katoomba Airport", and won't show Katoomba Airfield.

On entering the Airfield's gates, keep to the left hand track - there is no access to the observing field using the other two tracks. Drive past the "no entry" sign and turn right up the hill past the various buildings. The setup slab is on the left once you reach the main runway.

The first pic below shows the route to the Airfield coming from Katoomba. The second pic shows the way to the observing slab on the main runway.

If you have a telescope, bring it along! If all you have are binoculars, brilliant! Bring them! Binos are a fantastic astronomy tool. I always bring my pair. If you don't have a scope, no problem either, we like to share the views through ours.

Last note: It WILL get cold up there. Very blooming cold. Please come dressed appropriately, including shoes, gloves and beanie. The office building's combustion heater will be on for when you need a bit of a warm up. :cold: :campfire:

See you soon,

Alex.

Hooray ! Fingers crossed. Might even bring little one - only 8 months old and he's keen to try anything.

Please... Everyone refrain from buying scopes next week !

Would love to go but already registered for SPSP.

It might feel a little scary if your driving there for the first time at night. The last 3 km's to the airfield will be dark and a bit bumpy.

If you do go, just plot out your GPS to follow the exact route Alex has provided.

I'm surprised some of you aren't heading up there tonight - looks like perfect conditions for a few hours.

Hi All,
I spoke:lol: to Rod about 5:15pm on Friday night re our proposed outing tomorrow :stargaze:evening/night. He tells me that the weather on Friday night is fully :cloudy:overcast and that the temperatures have been getting down to zero and minus 2 :face:the last few evenings. If it goes ahead make sure that you wear warm clothes.

I'm going to contact him tomorrow afternoon around 2pm in order to gauge the weather and likelihood of a successful night:astron:. It's not much point :driving:driving all that way if we are only going to see clouds, as much as I do enjoy your company:).

Once I've spoken to him I'll post here and people can make their own :question:decisions on what they want to do.

If it is too miserable we'll all be better off at home I'll be having a few :drink:.

7 Timer suggests a very clear night at the airfield.

Weather Zone says mostly clear at 6pm mostly cloudy from 9pm onward:cloudy:
7 Timer says the same

Scenic World Sky Cam shows a lot of cloud at 12:30pm today.

All we can do is :prey2:

I'll contact Rod at 2 pm as planned and keep you all informed

Hi Guys,
I just tried phoning Rod but there was no answer.
Looking at the Scenic World Web Cam at 2pm the cloud seems heavier to me than when I checked at 12:30pm:cloudy:.
7 Timer and Weather Zone still saying cloudy from :cold:9-10 onwards.

I'm not prepared to drive:driving: for 2-3 hours and take the chance :juggle:unfortunately :prey: I'm pulling out. Unless somebody is willing to contact Rod and pick up his stipend :cheers:on the way up to the airfield then I'm afraid its a no goer tonight.

Have to watch the footy and have :drink:or two.
