:eyepop:That looks a bit too close for comfort.
On the bright side you can be very sure no one is ever going to build anything out there.

wow the whole house is shaking and the dome has been moved where i have it tied down, i reckon the wind must be 100kmph or more. there is a water leak in the ceiling in the kitchen and the rain is hitting the windows at the top under the back veranda

strongmanmike
20-04-2015, 11:24 PM
Sheesh Dave, hope all holds up. This is just the experience that will make you doubly paranoid about securing everything when you build I guess, which is a good thing :)

Hmm?..I hope my dome is held down well enough

Just looked at Newcastle weather radar and it certainly looks cyclonic - with an eye wall forming over Nelson Bay with a solid yellow-orange eye curling around clockwise in that spot. Crazy.

Rain gauge here at Rankin park registered >70mm in the 24 hours to midnight........should have seen the look SWMBO gave me this evening when I said I was going to take the scope out to look at the clouds :D

It's a tad wet here too, but when the floodwater is 50m from my fence it'll be too late to tell you!

Someone else's roof banging in your back yard? Doesn't sound good...

I hope it all hangs together for you. We've only had a measley 26.7mm yesterday and 8.7 so far today in comparison.

Take it easy out of those roads too.

Of course we know who to blame!! :poke: :D

It takes more than a new ep or filter set to cause this.

That dang scope has flooded my back-yard. :)

It looks like the worst of it has passed. I hope everyone is safe and dry. And take care on the roads.

PS I just walked across campus.. The wood ducks are happy and the kookas are feeding on worms forced to the surface.

PPS Some gardeners are out in wet weather gear blowing the leaves off the paths - safety issue I suppose.

My street is cutoff now. A couple of big trees have come down across the intersection and taken down power lines; the other end of the street is blocked by another downed tree. People are waiting for the SES but they are pretty busy with the houses around the peninsula that have lost their roofs. It doesn't seem to have gotten any better today. You can't see the wind in that photo but its still howling. I've lost all the screening hedge I planted a couple of years ago to block stray light - blown right out of the ground by the wind but hopefully I can replant them later.

And the observatory is doing fine, so far.

We get a couple of these rippers each year through SA. It's a little more unusual for you lot on the east coast from what I remember. I have built my roll off roof with 140km winds in mind. Last year I got a gust of 120km/h during a storm and it picked up the roof off the rack and floated the roof about 300mm away from closed position. I found it the following day. That aside the whole building was fine.

Dave I suggest you put another sleeper worth of concrete on top of your obs support/pier. You might need to go down a bit more too. That sort of flooding is going to affect your PA a lot. Also when you install the dome make sure you put in extra bolts into the concrete with large washers, that will stop any further storms lifting up the dome.

There was a cubby house in the corner of that yard - now under the tree. Note the wires tangled in the tree - still live I believe.

Al Meehan was supposed to take his wife to hospital this morning at 5:30am for an operation. unfortunately a large tree fell on all of his cars. Funny thing was i thought that something was wrong and went over at 5am. I ended up taking them up to the John Hunter. I hope that everything went OK as becoming more coherent only now i see that the hospitals had power issues.

Be safe your NSW'ers.
Also be prepared for loss of mobile coverage, last i checked an hour ago, 340+ mobile base stations without mains, over half of which do not have anything beyond 1-2hrs of battery life left.

If it's looking dicey, get out.

Spent all day trying to find a route up through the Hunter to get to
Coonabarabran. The roads are flooded.

On one stretch of two-lane road I counted 20 fallen trees across the road in 10km and 38 fallen trees in 50km.

Around Maitland, conditions were particularly bad. Much of the Hunter Valley
was blacked out.

I was forced to return to Sydney.

Speaking with Lachlan MacDonald on the phone this evening, he reports
it has cleared at Coonabarabran and it is now crystal clear.

Sorry for my flippant tone. At the time I thought it was just a bad night and some nuisance flooding. It's become much worse than that. The damage and loss of life is not funny.

Stay safe everyone.

From severe LP and other issues now to this in the new home.

Thoughts go out to all those in this natural disaster.

Just left a meeting in which some guys have been without power at home for 36 hours. It is pretty tough for them to leave their wife and kids in that situation to go to work as they're transport workers.

Even worse for those who have suffered significant losses.

What has amazed me is the dedication and resilience of the SES and the guys keeping the railway working despite ongoing incidents - even when the weather clears it's far from over as there is a huge legacy of damage to fix.

G'day all , hope the locals are all okay. I've been away working out at Wellington, left Tuesday morning, checked the rain gauge before I left, 143mm, returned this evening, overflowing at 180mm,so that's 323mm that I know of, and probably more. Now the wind did knock a tree down next door, unfortunately it landed in my place, taking out part of the fence, destroyed a lawn locker, aviary and ended up on top of the chook pen just brushing the corner of the observatory.Insurance will fix all of my problems and I wish all of those with much more severe damage all the best, and for those we have lost so suddenly in this weather crisis, my condolences to their loved ones.:(

power came back on tonight at 6, its been a wild ride, i thought the wind was bad the night before but the winds last night very scary. during an extremely heavy gust the power went off, from then on it was watching the high tension wires arc off. the house shook for hours and the swamp got a whole lot closer but this morning it was all receding quickly. trees and fences blown around and some roof damage, but still here:thanx: had well over 300mm

Good news about the receding water Dave.

We haven't had power at Minmi since Monday. No damage to house or obs though, just a fridge and freezer full of off food and an aquarium full of fish trying to breath.

Mike, she was glad that i had the upgraded wind loading on the shed, and i insisted on double anchor points, unlike a shed one street away. Abba is guarding it for me;)
