G'day guys. Decided to image M16 again with abit longer exposure of 5 minutes x 10 at ISO 800. A good opportunity to compare M16 shots with my DSI II also. From what i can tell, heres a list of pro's and con's:

350D UNMODDED:

- The 350D has a much bigger FOV which can capture entire nebula's

- The 350D colours are nicer even from unmodded.

- Can take non-astro images and piggy back for widefield shots

- Smaller pixel size which makes images more sharper

DSI II:
- The DSI II captures more photon's than the unmodded 350D = more details even with lower subs

- The DSI II has lower noise than the 350D

- Smaller chip which means less coma than the 350D for fast ratio scopes.

So that's the comparsion from what i have seen. Both camera's have their pro's and con's.

Hi Eric

your recent contributions have been prolific and inspiring to me!!

Thanks for posting.

Got to get some time under the stars myself and put the canon thru its paces.

I live in Melb too---is the nebula filter worth it??

Cheers guys thanks. Hi Ron, the UHC-S filter makes a reasonable difference. from what i can tell, the sky becomes darker and enchances the nebula glow. where abouts in melb are you? good to have another melbourian around. too many NSW'lers lol.

Eric,

For an object like M16, the modified 350D will be a great enhancement over the standard camera. M16 emits a lot of H-Alpha and the modified camera is over 4x more sensitive to this light.
