Sorry, another post to help sort out teething problems in my new set-up. The red dot finder that comes with the NexStar 8SE is pretty flimsy and not too great. It also needs a screwdriver to remove it (I have to transport my scope to use it, so this is a problem).

The Telrad on my old scope was better in every way and could be removed without tools and without messing the alignment.

Any recommendations for a more compact red-dot finder that I can mount easily on a NexStar 8SE (could put the Telrad on I guess, but it is rather large.....)?

I use one like this one below. No tools either and just leave the dovetail block on the scope:

Thanks again, that does look just the thing, a much better version of the one with the scope. Do you know whether the dovetail mount will fit easily on my 8SE? The Telrad mounts just stick on, but seem pretty sturdy.

A Telrad will fit on the 8SE ota. A much smaller alternative is the Rigel Quikfinder (available from Telescopes and Astronomy).

Another option is to get a quality 50 or 60mm finder and it can double up as a wide field scope ;)

I have one of these and I do not like it. A telrad or especially a Rigel quick finder is far easier to attach, remove and align. They also have a lot of anti-dew accessories as well if you require that.
