Gough died last year, I wonder if Malcolm has petitioned St Peter yet.

Seriously now, he will be remembered more for his post Governmental activism than the political career, except for one thing. Another of the true politicians has left us, compared to him and his ilk the current mobs are hopeless.

All I really remember of Fraser (and Whitlam for that matter) were Pickering's grand (and rather naked) caricatures of both ;) But I am only 42. :)

Indeed, statesmen are gone, replaced by self motivated grandstanding buffoons.

Irrespective of what you might think of their political inclination, you cannot fault either Andrew Wilkie or Scott Ludlam for their principles and courage in the face of mendacity.

It is unfortunate that with leadership comes either admiration or complete disrespect. It is part of the package.

I'd like to think Fraser and Whitlam are having a drink together (Fraser without any pants...:))... however warm that drink may be.

I always remember the bumper stickers from that era. In particular, favoured by people of the socialist ilk: "Tammy has one, Mal is one.." However, back then I believe Mal would have had a chuckle over that and moved on. Not today.
As Clive already pointed out the politicians these days are not statesmen of this calibre, and will never be remembered for it. Irrespective of your political leanings, Menzies, Whitlam and Fraser (and Hawke!) were still very impressive individuals who you could disagree with, but still respect, as their intellect and principles were clear to all.
Nobody is likely to say that of any of our last 5 or so incumbents...

Another one of the elder statesmen have passed on. I didn't agree will his all his policies but he was respected as we're all the politicians of that Era.

A far cry from the mob of today.

There will be many indigenous and under privileged people here and indeed throughout the world, particularly in South Africa where his dogged determination saw the end of apartheid, who will mourn the passing of this compassionate man. Tall in stature, big of heart, stood up for what he believed in, hidden behind a stoic , tough exterior.

Met the man on many occasions, even spent time on his protection detail, bought his Nikon lenses recently, didn't agree with many things he did but respected him for how he did them.
The current crop could do much worse than imitate him.
