I got the idea to image this object late in the season (thanks to Harel Boren) and I think I have almost run out of time now. I am trying to gather more luminance for this image as I am not happy with the noise level and it has meant I needed to undertake some noise control. If I get significantly more data before the end of the apparition I will post an update but now this is what I have put together.

I collected my data in the following:

Ha 930 minutes.
Luminance 360 minutes
Red 80 minutes
Green 100 minutes
Blue 100 minutes.

You could easily collect Lum rather than Ha to object a very similar result, though the dust lanes are more enhanced in the Ha data.

In the same field of view is NGC2182, NGC2183 and NGC2185 with NGC2182 having the most interesting looking structure.

Wonderful colours in those nebulae Paul, it's a great varied FOV! I don't mind the noise and the detail in the dust lanes look great.
On my monitor it looks like the black might be slightly clipped in a few of the darkest areas (outside the nebulae), but maybe it isn't?

Beautiful. I like the colour balance. The biggest brightest blue star seems to be lighting up a lot of very diffuse material around it, reminiscent of the Pleiades. The Flame-like dust lanes are special.

Thanks Steve, on my screen the noise is a bit distracting, and I am as you know obsessed by noise levels.




Thanks Marc. You are close; it is in Monoceros and transits around 60 degrees from my location, which is 35.5 degrees south.



The dust attracted me more than anything Greg, but this target lends itself to imaging with a long focal length. Maybe with a 17" CDK. ;)



Yep Leo, it is not an easy target. I now have another 2.5 hours on the lum but I doubt it would minimise the noise much yet. So not an easy target.



Thanks Rolf. The histogram is not clipped; though I am just inside the line and that would give the appearance of being clipped a bit. I guess the background being dark charcoal is contributing to the look too.



Thanks Mike: yes it is a complex area. Those bright blue stars a challenge to manage with long subs.



I reckon through your scope Rick this would look spectacular and I hope to see it next year. Not sure if you would have time this year even if it did clear up.



Hi Louie, I do have a reducer for the FSQ but I am not using it at present. I don't have enough back focus to run it, the rotator and the camera. Ideally, I would like to have them all.

You did very well Paul and I don't think that you have too much noise.
I tried this object - one of my favourites - last year but I concluded that my 330mm focal length wasn't enough for this, so it will have to wait for my next astrograph.

Hi Paul....bummer,at f/3.6 would of help heeps with the signal in the faint areas which I'm sure you know anyway.

So,any plans on replacing the Tak focuser with something with a lower profile?
