The 600d uses a newer sensor and had DIGIC 5 image processing while yje 1100 has DIGIC 4.
So, get the 600d if you can get it for a good price.

for deep space photography they are probably on par. the video on the 600d is much better from memory. so better at planetary is available there. but if you are thinking of upgrading there won't be much (any) noticeable difference unless you are doing video (planets).

cheers

I'm imaging with frac so the flip LCD would be handy I take it but will 18mp verses 12mp equate to sharper images on raw and jpeg?
Thanx in advance

The 1100d has larger pixel size than the 600d, so it is slightly more sensitive. It is also lighter than the 600d, cheaper and easier to modify.
Once you hook up the dslr to progrmas like backyard eos, the flip screen does not offer much of an advantage.
If you don't want to mod the camera, do a lot of normal photography and HD video, go for the 600, but if you want to mod the camera and use it as an ap camera, the 1100 might be a better choice.

18mp images will be no better than 12mp at laptop screen size or smaller, as the eye cannot resolve detail that small. The difference is
that 18 will allow much greater enlargement whilst maintaining good
resolution.
