I've lived in this country for 13 years. I've lived in THE country for nine.
I have driven all over the east coast and hinterlands. All the way to Port Douglas and back.
All those kliks and I have never hit anything. I've put myself off the road trying to avoid all kinds of creatures. I am a paragon of virtue in this regard.
OTOH, you'd be forgiven for thinking that my wife (aka: Lead Foot Lucy), a native Australian, gets paid to run over wildlife.
So I've been really smug about it all for years. :D

Until tonight.
I picked up leadfoot and her mate from spinning class and headed home. I hadn't gone 200 metres when flap-swish-thump, I hit a bird!
OMG I killed it! No!! Worse!!
Its flapping around with a busted something.
Out of the car, pick up the poor bird, back into the car, turn it over to "LFL" ready to head to the vets.
It dies in my hands. I am disconsolate.
Tears are forming.
"**** - me (!@me)" says the neighbour. "You don't do things by half do you"?!
Say what ??????????
I'd hit one of these: http://birdlife.org.au/projects/orange-bellied-parrot-recovery

So. Just shoot me.

Hmmm, only the best will do Peter, sorry you had the misfortune to hit anything.
Whilst traveling up North we were always on the look out and avoiding the big Lizards strolling across the roads.

Not a orange bellied, I'd leave the country now if I were you. If it happened around Tarwin it's too late for even that! :)

It did.
I'm in hiding.
Villagers. Torches. Pitchforks.

Nah, I think you will find similar mobilizations all across Australia.

They're after Tony, not you.
