Just saw BIG COMET AT 22:00 HOURS HEADING NORTH OVER HAMILTON NEW ZEALAND.
FIRE BALL WAS BRIGHT WHITE AND LOOKED SIZE OF FINGER TIP LASTED ABOUT 5 SECONDS .

If you saw it moving it was not a comet, more a meteor, although if it lasted that long? Maybe an Iridium flash?
But not a comet.

Fireball alright! These are meteors that come into the atmosphere at a very shallow angle, rather than the steep one short, flash-like streaks one sees. Coming in at a shallow angle, they skim along the top of the atmosphere, so they are longer lived. Can be very spectacular, and often leave a glowing trail behind them.
Fireballs can be quite sensational as they are always an unexpected sighting. Freaky even when you see a glowing after trail for the first time! :scared:

All in the papers this morning and some video capture from a driver down south. Big fireball with sonic boom.
DAMMIT!! i WAS INSIDE AND MISSED IT.
If the clouds had been cooperating I would have been outside imaging with the OB roof wide open ....
