Astronomy/Science Books for Beginners

I would like to learn more about Astronomy and science in general to help me gain a better understanding of our world and the universe. The problem is I only ever did basic science and can't remember much of it (besides from breaking a beaker).

Can any of you knowledgable people please recommend some books that would be a great start?

If you aren't opposed to watching TV, I can highly recommend the COSMOS series (remake) with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. It's relatively affordable on both DVD & Blu-Ray and has around 13 hours of viewing. A wonderful series.
