50 megapixel full frame!.

Does Sony have a 50mp DSLR, nope.

I'm not sure that I really need 50mp but watch with interest. The 11-14 F4L looks interesting if you can swallow the projected price....

Errrhh actually yes Fred. Sony Exmor 46-50mp full frame sensor is about to be released in a couple of Sony bodies and a Nikon body (rumour is within a few weeks). This will be an Exmor sensor with its superior Dynamic Range and possibly better high ISO performance (Canon are quite good there). The main advantage would be the better Dynamic Range where Sony Exmor sensors do well in low ISO low noise (ie. little noise in the shadows).

50mp for a nightscape camera could be quite interesting though. You really only need the ISO6400 performance so if it does match 5D3 or slightly better for noise it could make some nice night images.

A widefield Milky Way shot with a 100mm lens could be pretty spectacular.

The sample Canon 5DSr shots are impressive.

Interesting, doing some calculations, the pixel density should be the same as the 7DII, unless they have a magic rabbit to pull from the hat the noise performance will be no better than the 7DII.

Looking at Reviews the 7DII is on par with the 5DIII for dynamic range and noise performance....:confuse3:

Not counting the high end manufacturers, Pentax has had 50mp since October. Also comes with a bigger sensor although is admittedly pricier than the canon

For the price, you can buy a dedicated mono imager. Whats the point if you are after an astro camera?

When I rented the 60mp version I enquired about the price for the iq280. Lets just say after buying the body, back and lens, 60K won't be enough.

I suspect those medium format cameras have lousy high ISO performance. At least they used to. The Pentax 645 uses a 50mp Sony CMOS and that apparently has good high ISO performance.

No point in racing out a buying one though as Sony and Nikon are about to release their 50mp cameras very soon, possibly within weeks. So the prices will be quite competitive, especially the Sony offering (the Nikon is likely to be more expensive).

I've seen some sample 5DSr images and they really pop and are very vivid and crisp. Like the original Nikon D800e images only more so.

A lot of photographers say they don't want more megapixels but when you see these super crisp, popping 3D like images from huge megapixels its hard to see their view.

Traditionally no they didn't. Long exposures were also out of the question. However as you mentioned the new sony sensor in the 645z (also the IQ250 and H5D-50) can go up to, I think ISO 3200. still nowhere near as high as some slrs and mirrorless but still quite respectable compared to other MF cameras.
