Vela Supernova Remnant

I had previously thought that this target was non-viable with a DSLR, but after seeing Justin's DSLR version (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=129579&highlight=vela) of this region a few months back I decided I would have a go with my setup as well.

Image data captured over four nights from Dec 28 - Jan 31.

Telescope: 130mm f5 newtonian
Mount: HEQ5
Camera: modded Canon 450D with regulated cooling at 10C
Exposure details: 83 x 480s @ ISO1600

I found this a tricky one to balance the processing of the wispy nebulosity with that of the rich star field. Critique welcome :)

Wow Richard that is a magical image. Sensational colour and varied brightnesses. A very vibrant and interesting image. The star colours are terrific. I love everything about this image, the nicest one of this area I have seen for ages.

ps. how do you stack 83 images? Do you stack in lots of 10 or 20 ad then stack the masters?

Thanks Russ. The other obs has been offline for the few weeks due to a PC hardware failure and then the need to clean the mirror and recollimate my VC200L. In the interim I have swapped in my 200mm f6 newtonian for some lunar and planetary imaging. I haven't really done any serious planetary before, so im still on the learning curve :lol:




Thanks Greg! re stacking, I simply stack them all together at once, rather than stacking in batches. I do this for all my images - even those which have 100's of subs. It takes a while, but fortunately the PC I use for processing has 32GB of RAM which makes this possible.

Very fine. The Vela SNR is one of the very few objects that I wish was a bit further away, so it would fit in my scope. Jealous. Nicely done.
