I'm looking at lists of objects and their RA/Dec coordinates. Realistically, how far north can I see from my SA location, not going lower than say 15°?

How do I calculate this?

As a general rule, take your latitude, subtract it from 90, and then subtract your 15 degree horizon limit. So in Adelaide (lat 34S) you'll get a pretty clear look at everything up to about DEC +40.

Thank you for that.

If you download and install Stellarium (http://www.stellarium.org/) you'll be able to view interactively your skies any time of the year from your location once you have entered your latitude and longitude. It's very realistic and a great visual aid.

I use stellarium, but I have a couple of PDF's of Messier and NGC objects and I just wanted a quick way of eliminating objects out of my viewing range.
