I would like to take the time to tell all of the relatively small pool of more
experienced members that help newbies, and comp illiterates like me in so many ways, that their efforts are greatly appreciated. Without their help I'm sure that some newbies would have dropped by the wayside.

I am a bit disappointed that 83 people have viewed this post, and not
one has echoed my sentiments.

A big echo from me as well raymo, have mentioned it in my posts-thanks to all IIS members.
Who would have thought one month after christmas and a failed toy Aldi dob, I would have an 8 inch Dob real scope and be viewing the bands around Jupiter and looking for DSOs.
Would on my own have given up.:thanx:

Hey Raymo, a great sentiment & one I agree with. I have learnt so much here and in turn been able to give some back too. 15yrs ago it was unheard of to get such help freely. Astronomy is so much more approachable for so many people here than it was in the past. So THANKS IIS members you :rockband:

Don't feel bad, there were 82 others, and telling us puts you up
some notches in my estimation.

This forum is the friendliest I've ever been part of. In the last week in particular, I've had to call on the experience of these kind people you speak of Raymo, but I include you in that esteemed group. Thanks to you and everyone else for your help and encouragement. One day I hope I can return the favour in a small way.

Sorry Raymo, but though I agree with your sentiments, I am not one to post thumbs up or smileys in response to others remarks. Hence I have only a few hundred posts after 8 years on the forum, and not thousands.

To keep on topic though I see no reason not to name those who have been helpful to me - Coldknights (Cathy) and rrussell1962 (Richard) have both been of great help to me in the past. Many thanks

This is the first time I have read this post. I totally agree with all that has been said. People here are so willing to pass on their knowledge to the new comers ( I certainly am in that bracket)
'Tis a great forum..

Cheers Reverend.

Yep thanks for all the help in getting started out, great to find genuine help and enthusiasm for noobs and no patronising or elitist nonsense. The only 'dumb' questions are the ones that didn't get asked. Everyone has to start learning sometime and we noobs just started later ;) :thanx:

Well as I am still a newbie and really don' t venture off the Beginners forums I have just come across this post. And I must agree that the help, knowledge and patience is excellent.............and believe me they have needed to be very patient!!

The help and advice on this site has been very friendly & invaluable.

You certainly saved me spending money on equipment that is not suitable for my personal astro style.

I agree totally Raymo

I do feel for square one beginners because many of the shots posted in the 'beginner's section' are more like 'enthusiast intermediate' - which can appear like a hubble image to true beginners. :) perhaps if there were an intermediate section it would encourage more beginners to seek feedback.

encouraging words especially early on are a must to get through the early (and continual) frustrations

Cheers

Great idea Rusty. You even get occasional images that are beyond intermediate. I think that many deserving imagers don't believe
that their images are worthy of elevation to the main forum.

Raymo & others, I agree wholeheartedly. Great forum and very different to many others in a positive way. That includes the Classifieds section, which has me wondering what the purpose of the bay, the tree etc. is, at least for astro gear...

Having said that - if I was an astrophotographer fairly new to the "trade" and this was to ever become one of my goals:

I'd know it was time to find another hobby. ;)

A lot of helpful people seem to have left the forums over the years. I find it harder and harder to get good information TBH. I guess it might be easier for a new starter with standard questions like 'how do I guide' or 'how do I polar align', etc... but as you progress in the hobby and need to ask a bit more in depth specific questions I find the 'top guys' (or so they think) can become very protective of the way they do things, especially in the processing part of the hobby. You can ask direct questions without getting a simple answer most of the time or you'll get a vague 'oh, you know, it depends. It's always different'. Which it really isn't. In the end I regard this as a hobby and a way to socialise and have fun but for some it has turned into a competition over the years.
