Well, you know, seeing as it is the middle of January and there isn't an M42 picture on the first page of the Deep Space section :) ...

By the standards of this forum, this image is no more than a casual snapshot! - but it represents the first dark-sky site photo for my photography rig, under very clear, but dewy skies near Nerriga. Dew and oddly dodgy guiding stole about another 45 minutes of data.

4 x 300s, 12 x 30s, darks, flats, bias subtracted, processed in PI and PS2. Extra grainy, just for that old-fashioned look

Very good looking M42 photo Andy...much more than a "snapshot".

Sharp with nice "natural" colours.

Well composed as well.

Ross.

Well Andy it may not be bazzilion hours of exposure but it is still a perfectly legitimate image worthy of showing and really quite well done in all the important aspects. Just becasue an image has some noise in it is no reason to not show it, the level of noise is not too objectionable anyway and (as you well know) if/when you add some more data it will look even better, so post it again

It is the Orion Nebula though and quite a rare object to be imaged at this time of year ...so thanks for posting :P

Perhaps we've all forgotten where it is? :P

Nice one Andy! Not a bad maiden voyage for the rig.

A nice quickie, Andy. Some more data and a little HDR magic and you're really in business :)

Cheers,
Rick.
