What scope are you using, Scott? The image looks pretty good but the stars are a little odd.

SW ED80 with 0.85 focal reducer.
NB data was 30 minute subs
RGB was 10 minute subs, taken from Dorrigo in NSW
Yes, they are a little bloated. I think that is a processing issue not the data itself. The original data looks pretty good.

I wondered if the scope was something like a VC200L which has thick spider vanes and can produce diamond shaped stars. Since it's a refractor I think you're right and it's something to do with the processing.

Ah, in regards to the diffraction spikes, I have put a plastic cap off our kitchen range hood over the end of the scope to get the spikes. I happen to like them. But it is only on the RGB data, not the NB.

Does that explain it?

Now having had a think about your comment, I think the plastic is a bit thick. I have removed the cap and I am going to put some cotton over the dew cap tomorrow. Thanks Rick!

That would explain it, Scott! Something thin like cotton would be a better choice for adding spikes. I believe there are ways to do it in software as well, but I've never tried it.
