Here is a seldom imaged galaxy--NGC908. It's not large--6' x 3', so I've cropped the real estate from 4096 x 4096 pixels down to 1960 x 1660 pixels.

It is a starburst a galaxy undergoing a period of intense star formation. There are numerous clumps of bright stars in its spiral arms. Notice also the peculiar split in the spiral arm on the left (eastern) side of the galaxy. Both the intense star formation and the spiral arm split suggest that the galaxy has been disturbed by some other galaxy. However, no other galaxy is visible near NGC908. Possibly it may have been absorbed in the encounter, or it may be massive, but very faint, or it may be hidden behind NGC908.

Telescope: PlaneWave 12.5"CDK
Mount: AP900GTO
Camera: FLI Proline16803
Total exposure was 4.8 hours--an hour or so of R, G and B and somewhat more for L.

EDIT: had another longer look and meah.. forget my comment above, it jooks ok

(has a psycolomological problem with decon...decon...where is the decon :scared2: )

Yeah. I need to work a bit more on the decon so that it improves the image but stays backstage.

It's pleasing to see someone else taking images of moderately obscure galaxies .... and you've done a remarkably good job on this.
I for one, really like your processing.

best,

Thanks Greg. I'm very pleased with the camera so far.

Thanks Rick. Nice to get positive comments from the experts.

Thanks Clive. Yes, I like to go off the beaten track at least once per session.

Hi Geoff,
Looks like a nice capture to me.
I wonder if you could get more detail out of it with 3 x drizzle used in stacking?

cheers

A truly beautiful photo Geoff. The colour in the galaxy is magnificent. Interesting background.

Always worth a try, but my guess is that this is already an adequately over-sampled image of a very small galaxy at long focal length, and is actually pretty darn sharp already.

Best,
Mike

Thanks Allan. Drizzle needs lots of subs and I don't have enough. Also i'm quite oversampled, whereas to get a real advantage you need to be undersampled.

Thanks Mike. I fiddled quite a bit with the crop to get a good combo of galaxy and stars.

That is enough Mike. Please do not bag me again anywhere on this site again; your insults are not funny and you are in breach of the TOS. You are being a bully. Moderation I ask that you deal with this behaviour.

BTW Geoff, I rather like this image. The colour is nice and the detail pleasing. There is a bit of a gradient in the background.

Oh come'on it was clearly light hearted with no malice whatsoever, heck I was bagging myself for goodness sake! Don't read so much into posts, sheesh, look at the funny side instead will ya?

Thanks Paul. I'll have another look at the gradient.

Mike,

Hi Geoff,
I know you are over sampled at 0.73 arc seconds per pixel -
but you might just get a bit extra -
especially when you zoom in on the image -
if you want to make a larger image out of the galaxy.
I'd try a re-stack just for the fun.

cheers
Allan

Yep, the gradient is there on closer examination. It was easy to eliminate with PixInsight's DBE, although I haven't got around to updating the post

I'll have a go at it Allan and see what turns out.

Thanks Ross. BTW I like your website. I should set up something myself, but keep putting it off.
