Moretus and South Pole

I tooks some images several days ago of the Moon. Here is the crater Moretus and the south pole. Check out the enormous Leibnitz mountains on the limb.

How did you get your 12" Reflector up to f/21?

I just read on your website that it is because you use Eyepiece Projection. :thumbsup:

Thanks. I use eyepiece projection because I'm too cheap to buy a barlow lens - it was easier to build an adaptor for my 9-mm Nagler than to buy a barlow (you can see images of the adaptor in the book chapter in the publications section in my webpage). Also, I unscrew the buit-in 2X barlow in my 9-mm Nagler to make it an 18 mm. Only on good nights can I used it as a 9-mm eyepiece, in which case it gives f/42 with the SkyNyx.

My 12 inch is f/5.75 at prime focus so a 4 or 5X barlow will easily get it to above f/21.

Hello, Zac

Wow - that is a stunning image of a very interesting region of the Moon. Seeing your image made me go and check a mosaic of a similar region that I captured on 18th Feb 2006 and the difference between the 2 images due to libration are quite pronounced. Your image "looks further" over the horizon and reveals and distinguishes mountains that were not visible in my mosaic.

Here is my mosaic showing the region at a less favourable libration. Interesting comparison.

Thanks. There's not much difference between the two images except as you say the libration. The toucam is such value for money. I've been waiting for favourable librations for quite some time to get the Leibniz mountains at the south pole. They're amongst the highest on the moon.

Great image, Zac. I captured the same area last night and I too noticed the libration gave it a real "flying over the moon" feeling. I'm hoping the favourable tilt will make some craterlets in plato more visible.

btw Cor contacted me and offered for me to use the new Registax 4 - of course I gratiously accepted.. especially with so many avi's from last night to go through, this will come in handy!

Yes, we're in the final stages of the beta version. Cor has closed all suggestions for format changes and we will now concentrate on cleaning up the program for bugs. He's sent the latest version to people outside the development group. I'm not surprised he picked you. Your images are very nice. I think you'll like the MAP function...
