We cannot hope for aliens to make contact with us as long as there are people on this planet who wear reindeer horns on their heads in December - even in surgeries and banks! They must think we are too retrograde.

Yes, a happy winter (summer?) solstice to you all, or, if you like and have a classical education, a merry Saturnalia!
I know I'd be drinking to Saturn if it was up, so I'll just be drinking
Cheers
Steffen.

I would expect anyone who doesn't agree  with the celebration of Christmas to make sure they turn up to work on Thursday and refuse to accept any penalty rates for their toil. :mad2:
For Marc and all the others, may your Christmas be a Very Merry and Joyous :xmas: one and may your gifts :family: bring much enjoyment to those you give them to.

But why, in this secular society of ours those are public holidays, regardless of your creed.
That said, the nights getting longer surely is reason enough to celebrate for astronomers
Cheers

Best wishes to all.
Though I think the Gaia types appear somewhat envious that they don't have their own festive day.
Cheers,

The Christmas tree is a pagan tradition. Jesus (as a man) was not born on the 25th of December. But people keep buying stuff they don't need (and others don't need either) because the retailers brainwash them. Then they run around with horns on their heads humming carols. Many presents end up in OP shops soon after Christmas because they are unwanted. A huge paper waste too... BAHHHHH HUMBUG!!!!!
PS: I still remember I never got what I wanted for Christmas as a child because my family seemed to think I wanted something to put on, while I wanted books or a telescope or a microscope, just not something selected by others to put on!!! As a nerd I never wanted to follow trends etc., but wanted to be myself, so I am the only one who can select what I want to put on.
Happy New Year though!

Scored well on the gift front too with a pristine copy of Hartung's and a new Garmin GPS..........
Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas Day today........ we are just going to chill ........
Oh and to those of you who believe the Earth is round and other new age stuff, have an enjoyable 'whatever you choose to believe in' day
