As I selected the Helix target last month with a good result from everyone....I have the power to nominate a member to choose this months DSO target.
All I ask is try to select a target that many members can image without staying up till 4:00am in the morning....target can be of any size or mag.
I choose Scott {Tornado}...come on down.
Scott has chosen NGC 6563.
Scott you will choose this months target and will nominate someone for next months duty at the end of the month.

And don't pick a mag 16 planetary, Scott :P Make it achievable by those who aren't superhuman ;)
I'm looking forward to this.
It sounds very intriguing.

Good on ya Tony
By the power invested in you ...:]
took me a month to get a descent shot at the Helix just to miss the deadline by a few hours!!!!
I'll try to do it in the time frame this time
:]
K'mon Scott pick a good one! (preferably visible in the Southern Hemisphere)
hahaha

Scott is currently trapsing around some national park today taking happy snaps with friends:whistle: . I will draw this to his attention when he returns late this afternoon:D . Then tell him that he has to pick something higher than mag 7:whistle:

bah... ya wimps. If it's not mag 16 or fainter it just aint worth imaging! :) I'd like something about mag 18.5 :)

and only wide enough to be viewed at prime focus for a toucam at 208x ie no wide fields!!!
lets say a planet!!!

Thanks for the nomination Tony
I choose NGC 6563, a planetary nebula in Saggittarius. Its well placed for observation now, and is "medium" size so a target for DSLRs on scopes and longer fl lenses, as well as DSI and similar cameras. Its not rediciously faint either :)
80 secs in diameter and mag 14 in blue. It has a mix of red and blue like the Helix so is good for both modded and unmodded DSLRs
Heres my effort, taken a little while ago
3x5 mins ISO 800 UHCS filter, MPCC and modded 350D on 10 inch scope
Happy imaging
Scott
This will be a good challenge for me as I am still fairly new to the imaging game and need to increase my skills up a few levels.
cheers

My short effort tonight,
I wont have another opportunity as its already past zenith...I managed to take 3 x 3minute exposures ISO800...thats it....gone for another year for me...lol
Would have loved to get some more exposures...I never post an image with only 9 minutes of total exposure time but saying that I am happy with how it turned out.
No flats or darks just 3 images combined.
Canon sensor was -1.2°c :scared: ambient 15°c

Very nice Tony. crisp and plenty of details in yours.
here's mine with the DSI II .

Must've been a few clear nights recently! I finally got one last night so managed to snap this guy.
It doesn't quite compete with the nice colour shown by the colour camera's, but considering the viewing conditions of the time (very turbulent) I'm quite happy with the result.

I don't think mine looks 8.5 times as good as Tony's but it's 8.5 times the exposure time!
:)

Nice image Roger....there is always something about monochrome images that make them enjoyable to look at.
Just for future reference Mike has agreed that we will make 2 seperate threads just like photo challenge and have them sticky. 1 thread for the images and 1 thread for comments.
Is this another planetary.????????

Hi All,
I love a challenge.
Here's my attempt at NGC6563.
Prime focus 8"LX200GPS. SBig ST-7XME, LRGB, 30,15,15,15 mins.
Stars are a little bloated due to pretty crappy seeing (visual estimate) and shooting this over my next door neighbors house.
Enjoy!

Nice image Stuart! My ST7's feeling very inadequate without a CFW-8 :)

Well done folks, great images there all.
Yes, Tony, looks like youve found a Planetary, however, an unknown one, not even on Star Atlas pro, so it isnt in any of the catalogues, it does appear when using Star Atlas pro to generate a DSS image of the area. Ive also found it on my original image, heres a crop of the area. Its definately blue in colour

Thats why I asked the question...I saw it on Scotts images so I new it wasn't something I did while processing....
Cool its called Strikers Planetary now.....lol
Thats a lovely image Stuart.....

Hehehe I never thought suggesting this object would lead to the discovery of a new Planetary LOL. Its on the UKST HA survey images but NOT on their catelog. Heres a pic of it I got off their server

Yeah, sorry, I should have looked closer...
Would be kind of cool if it's undiscovered, hard to believe though, to be honest. :) But I'll stay optimistic :)

Fantastic effort guys  Hats off to everyone.
Scott, what's the process for claiming discovery? Do you know?

Hi All,
I've made another attempt at processing this. I think it's a little better, not sure though there's much more detail there. Interesting anyway. Same raw images.

Hi All,
Another NGC6563, this one @ f5 (thanks Zane for the FR).
Cheers
Stuart
Hi everyone,
here's is my entry for the September challenge and only my second ever colour image. I've still got heaps to learn but everything fell into place last so it was definitely more fun than effort.
NGC6563
LX200R 12" in Alt/Az (no wedge yet) with DSI II Pro and f3.3 focal reducer.
30 x 30s images in Luminescence.
30 x 30s each with RGB filters.
Processed with MaximDL (still learning that part)
I also observed it visually after imaging using averted eye technique which was a real buzz as at mag 14 I thought I'd be pushing it somewhat.
cheers
:astron:
Hi all,
Just wondering if an "October Imaging Challenge" target has been chosen yet or am I jumping the starters gun.
cheers

I hope it's in the eastern sky......and above 45 deg......I can't shoot through my house in the first instance or through the trees in the second :P Straight up and north and south ....that's me :D

Its Scotts turn to select a member to choose this months DSO imaging challenge.
Each month the selected member will choose a DSO and then pick the next month nominee...so everyone has the opertunity to select a target.
If you need a hand starting the thread I'm sure one of the moderaters can start it for you.
Come on down Scotty.
