Hi All,

I am looking at buying my wife a coma corrector to give to me for Christmas :). I have a 14" Skywatcher Goto Dob (f/4.5) and primarily use if with an ES 24mm 82 or ES 14mm 82. I also use if for astrophotography. For both uses, I do notice the coma. Attached is an unadulterated single 15 second image of NGC 5139 and the coma is evident.

I understand that the TV coma corrector is considered the pick of the bunch but it is just so darn expensive. I have also heard that the Baader MPCC can cause problems with the limited travel of the Skywatcher focuser.

Can someone please let me know their experiences with either the Baader or Explore Scientific coma correctors.

Thanks,

Duncan

hi Duncan,

the baader MPCC is 100% fine on my skywatcher 12" goto dob's focuser. I believe its more an issue for the GSO focusers, hope that helps.

Hi Russell,

Thank you for your help. Do you have any issues with any of your eyepieces?

Duncan I have both the GSO Coma Corrector and the Baader MPCC Mark III and they both work in my GSO 16" dob, but I use only the Baader for imaging in my 10" imaging newt which has a GSO linear rail focuser. They both can be taken apart to attach to a camera (dslr) but only the Baader provides additional infocus range so I think its your safe bet. The Baader is also lighter than the GSO unit, which can help with dob balancing. I know people that swear by the Televue but its big, heavy, and expensive. Having looked through a Televue I can't see it as any better than the Baader and you have to adjust the top for various EPs.

Thank you for your help. I am leaning towards the Baader MPCC but has anyone had any experience with the Explore Scientific coma corrector?

I use the ES HR visually. As good as it gets IMO. Gets rid of the coma in my f4.8 Newt and ES 82º eyepieces 30 and 18mm are good with the helical part 15mm out...ES 68's are good at 19mm out. There was a thread last year???? in the eyepiece section, on the ES HR and Adrian, who started it has a SW dob with a Synta focuser.
The beauty of the ES is no parfocal rings are needed with the helical threads. Once you have worked out whats best, visually that is, it's easy. Also comes with some bits for camera's to attach once the helical part is screwed off.

Thank you for the input. Now the important question. Where can I get an Explore Scientific Coma Corrector in Australia?

You can't. You have to order it from one of many the many US suppliers and ship it in.
