I've developed a procedure where Ha emissions in a galaxy are subtly brought out according to the strength of the emission rather than the typical ultra high contrast view.

I think this procedure has potential as I think I will be able to use it to differentiate between OIII and Ha emissions. Further study is required....

I've picked NGC 55 as the target as the Ha detail is not as obvious as in other galaxies.

Details.

LHaRGB image.
L 4 hrs, Ha 3 hrs, RGB 1 hr each.
BRC 250 scope STXL-11002.

Full resolution.

thats a good 55 steven, i have never seen too much detail in this untidy galaxy before
there are a fair few other fuzz balls around there too!

Beautiful Steven! Good detail and the colouring looks spot on and natural. Whatever you're doing, it works.

Bit of a colour gradient going on there though plus I see some vertical banding on the left had side. Some kind of interference?

Cheers, Marcus

Wow, it is excellent shot Steven. You really have wonderful image with nice details. I think it will be interesting to have some shots in OIII to see the differents.

Really enjoyed this one Steven. Best 55 I've ever seen I think.

Wonderful Steven!lots of background galaxies too.

Thanks Marcus.
It is a flat field issue that needs addressing.

Thankyou Franck.
Hopefully I will be able to get 3 hrs of OIII data for a direct comparison.

Robert Gendlar's image is the benchmark.
Thanks Rob for the comment.

It's good to have a decent chip size Louie, instead of "cramming" data on a ST-X10ME.

A very nice image, Steven. Are you going to tell how you did it or keep us all in suspense? :)

All will be revealed Rick once I obtain the OIII data.
Pixinsight plays a starring role.

Very nice Steven. That's the way to do the Ha regions--easy to see but not blinding us in brilliant red light.

Thanks Geoff.

Flats were retaken to address the gradient and banding issues in the original.

Nice NGC55 and a good Ha technique Steven. I'm seeing vertical bands in the background. As I recall my STXL11002 used to do that some times. Generally caused by pushing the cooling too far I think.

Interesting I can't see the bands on my monitor unless I stretch the image in PI.
I have not seen this effect on older images, only after I had the CCD repaired by SBIG for an unrelated issue.

A very nice looking galaxy photo Steven.

Great detail.

Thanks Rod and Ross.

Still waiting on acquiring OIII data to put the technique to the test in bringing out any "unique" OIII emissions in the galaxy but the weather isn't cooperating.
