Been experimenting with processing images with a high range, I thought this didn't turn out too bad except for the core.
its basically a single 10 min sub with my 10inchF4 using the L filter.
need to spend some time with varied length short exposures and get the core proper.

Anyone seen this APOD, there's so much in the area, its unreal.

That's quite nice except for the core as you mention.

And that APOD... *wow* :) I don't think I'll take my mosaic quite as far as that though!

Hi Alistair, thats come out quite well.

Pretty amazing image you linked to, we don't realise that the nebulae we see are really just the brighter points of a huge complex.

Nice one Alistair, yes combining much shorter subs helps considerably, with your bright scope I'd try 10 seconds.

yeah, it is a massive complex.

I use the Microsoft World wide telescope to browse around, its amazing cause it has hi res images for the entire north and south skies and you can zoom in.

install the client, change the mode to "sky" at the bottom, the "Digitized sky survey" shows hi-res images.

it also has a neat feature to project it to a hemispherical reflector and create your own planetarium.

Alistair that is an awesome image mate. Really fine detail and once you sort out the core it will be a real corker. Mate I'm just curious, which camera did you use for this, just wondering because there is a funny little squiggle adjacent to each star and I was wondering what could cause that.

Ha ha, well spotted.
Thats my adaptive optics getting the guide star back to the centre cause there was a fair bit of wind that time.
Since its over 10mins, the bright stars off position would register.

Thanks, I plan to revisit and get a deep m42 mosaic and hopefully tame the core in the process.

Hi Alistair,

Thats looking really good.
I too noticed the little squiggle on each of the stars. I think when you add more subs it might get rid of them.
Also the star on the right has double spikes, is that caused by the wind also.
