View Full Version here: : Can you attach a Carbon Fibre C9.25 to a CG5 dovetail?

Well I went to place my order for the above this morning, to be told by the local retailers that they aren't sure if you can actually attach a carbon fibre C9.25 to a CG5 (rather than a CGE) dovetail.

I thought this would be the least of my challenges - it might at most only be a reasonably small additional cost.

So fingers crossed - but please tell me has anyone else here tried and accomplished this? Is it possible or is it a simply technically impossible task for some unforeseeable (to me) matter?

Many thanks!

Doesn't the scope come with the CG5 dovetail...every Celestron SCT I have seen does....not sure why the CF would be any different.

Nope - Carbon fibre from 9.25" upwards only sells with the CGE style mounts. It is unclear if you can attach a CG5 mount to a CF OTA - and if doing so is advised against for any technical reason whatsoever...

While others are happy with them, I have never liked the "attach the rail to the two cells method, especially with a few little screws. My suggestion is to look at a set of rings, and attach them to the rail.

My sentiments exactly Gary. Structurally speaking, those 3 screws being the only thing stopping the OTA from hitting the deck is quite frankly, a crap idea.

In certain positions with the EQ mount, all the stress is on 2 screws rather than 3 & not to mention the stress on the front & rear 'cells'. I've been using safety straps just in case one screw (or more) decides to give up the ghost. Yet another DIY project in the near future for me

Being able to rotate the OTA in rings to get the finder in a better position at times would be a big bonus as well..

YES - I have an orange rail Celestron one that I used to use for my Vixen GPDX mount. I removed the shipped and fitted OEM CGE rail and fitted the Celestron OEM Vixen style rail until I acquired a WO Saddle whence I reversed the operation.

Cheers

PS - I alluded to this in Msg #7 of your previous post (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=12781)
