my camera has a macro setting. its not a dslr, just a click and go :)

You were not too far off, David. It is in fact a glass bowl which was left out on our back balcony overnight and which filled with rainwater. The 'aeration' is perfectly natural and, although it looks like it does, the bowl does not have a rim.
