I found this image in my album and did a repro. I used the 2k version from http://i1063.photobucket.com/albums/t510/jsmoraes/Galaxias/ps_iris_ngc55_2k.jpg

Most important is that it was done with 102 frames of 20 seconds. Total time of 34 minutes. No guinding. This is fantastic. I believe only because I did.
When I hadn't guiding, I worked very hard to get these and others images. I remember. Good polar alignment and manual correction after each ten frames. And much diplomatic conversation with DSS to accept stack the images with misalignment ! :P

note: it seems that the light pollution here, today, will not permit this capture as it was done.

 I read that NGC 55 seems to have three nucleus. An extreme part of the galaxy (east-southeast arm) was named as IC 1537, that is galaxy for Simbad. Others tell about nebulosity inside NGC 55.

For me, it seems to be an active absorption of a dwarf galaxy by NGC 55. Or maybe, as viewed by edge, an arm from spiral shape

Nice going Jorge. It's certainly an interesting object.

nebulosity.

Beautiful Jorge, I love unguided images

Have just finished making a new drive system on my mount so hope to be doing some unguided imaging soon myself :D

Cheers

That's a brilliant effort for 20-second subs! I've just started processing up a bunch of 30-second Carina shots I took on a really windy night (so impossible to guide) was surprised how much detail showed up, but I don't think it's as much as you have here - well done.

I read a little about NGC 55 when looking up about the recent supernova impostor - apparently it may be (if I recall) a barred irregular, so a fair bit like the LMC, but seen edge-on. I think that's an interesting thing to think about when you're looking at the shape of this galaxy.
