Hi I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the celestron CG5 EQmount.
I'm thinking of buying one but not sure if they are any good.
all help much appreciated.

they're reasonable but they have been superseded by the VX mount

They were very popular for many years - if it's in good working condition for the right price it should be a decent mount. Just watch that the original 2" tripod hasn't been swapped for the 1.75" tripod from another mount - the 2" is much more stable. The 1.75" tripod would be ok at a lower price.

Thank you for ta king the time to reply.
The VX goes for around 1100 and the CG5 for around 800 the VX looks a better mount but is it 300 dollars better.
Also I have heard the CG5 needs to be re greased from scratch to stop jittery movement during imaging.
Any truth to these claims she or should I just go with the cheaper mount as I'm only an amature.
Also do you think the CG5 could handle a 8 inch SCT.
As I would like to get one eventually.
Thanx again.

:) For a C8 you would be way better off grabbing Clancy Lane's HEQ5 for $650 in the classifieds , that is a way better mount for this sized scope .
This is not to say the EQ5 is a bad mount , far from it as these are great for say a C6 or up to 4 inch refractor .

By the way you wont go wrong with a C8 in the future , great scopes .

Brian.

Brad,
As Brian says…and $650 for an HEQ5 pro…unheard of... even if it does have a bit missing. The only problem might be getting it to Perth but Auspost did deliver an NEQ6 in bits with a bit of prompting…thanks Lewis. The HEQ5pro is smaller and lighter by quite a lot. Upgrade to v. 3.35 and viola…..

Brad, just wondering who's got the VX for $1100?
I've got the VX mount and I like it a lot; its capacity is similar to the HEQ5 I owned previously but the AVX is more stable because of the heavier duty tripod. The VX comfortably carries a C9.25 for visual.

A used HEQ5 Pro for $650 is a good deal.
